What this route typically costs
Critical points
Lebanese administrative processes can be slower than expected. Start the import permit application at least 10-12 weeks in advance and follow up regularly.
The political and logistical situation in Lebanon can change. Check current conditions with your transport agent and the airline before booking.
MEA is the most reliable carrier for BEY, but their cargo acceptance should be confirmed before booking.
Beirut Airport has experienced periods of disruption. Build contingency time into your planning.
Working with Lebanese administrative processes
Lebanon’s Ministry of Agriculture controls live animal imports, and the import permit process is the aspect of this route that most requires patience. The Ministry’s responsiveness can vary, and obtaining the permit is not always as fast as the official process might suggest. Contact agriculture.gov.lb well in advance, ideally ten to twelve weeks before your intended travel date.
Be prepared to follow up on your application. If you are not receiving responses within a week or two of submitting, contact the Ministry again. A pet transport agent with experience in Lebanon can be particularly valuable here, as they will have established contacts within the Ministry and will know how to handle any delays.
Once you have the permit, the rest of the process follows a familiar pattern: EU export health certificate from your German official vet, endorsed by the Bundesland authority, presented on arrival at Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY).
Flight options from Germany to Beirut
Middle East Airlines (MEA), Lebanon’s national carrier, is the most direct option for pets travelling from Germany to Beirut. MEA operates Frankfurt-Beirut (FRA-BEY) flights and has a codeshare relationship with Lufthansa on some routes. A direct service of approximately 4.5 hours is significantly less stressful for your pet than a two-connection routing.
Lufthansa also serves the FRA-BEY market, either directly or via connections. Lufthansa Cargo can handle live animals, and the Frankfurt Animal Lounge at FRA is an excellent facility if your pet needs care during any transit period.
Emirates via Dubai is a third option if MEA or Lufthansa are not available on your dates. The FRA-DXB-BEY routing adds transit time, but Emirates SkyCargo is experienced with live animal movements and Dubai Airport has good facilities for animals in transit.
