Step by step

The Fiji to United Kingdom pet import process

Each step must be completed in a precise sequence. Start early. We manage every stage and deadline.

1
Confirm the microchip is fitted before any rabies vaccination is given.
Responsible: Your vet in Fiji
As early as possible, and always before step 2.
2
Rabies vaccination administered, dated clearly on the certificate.
Responsible: Your vet in Fiji
At least 21 full days before travel.
3
Send supporting paperwork, vaccination record and microchip details, to the BAF veterinary officer ahead of the final inspection.
Responsible: You or your agent
At least 7 days before the booked inspection date.
4
Attend the final pre-export inspection with BAF and receive the export health certification.
Responsible: BAF veterinary officer
3-5 working days processing once documentation is complete.
5
Book cargo space and confirm the transfer routing (via Los Angeles, Sydney or Auckland) with an airline or specialist agent that will actually carry a live animal into the UK.
Responsible: You or your agent
6-8 weeks before travel, since space and transfer handling need confirming in advance.
6
Dogs only: tapeworm treatment given and recorded.
Responsible: Your vet in Fiji
24 to 120 hours before landing in Great Britain.
7
Great Britain Pet Health Certificate issued, covering the microchip, vaccination and tapeworm treatment.
Responsible: Your vet in Fiji
Within 10 days of travel.
8
Travel from Nadi via a connecting hub, transferring to a carrier that flies into Heathrow or Gatwick. If unaccompanied, submit the IPAFFS pre-notification.
Responsible: Airline cargo handlers and your agent
On travel date; IPAFFS notification at least 1 working day ahead.
Requirements

What your pet needs to enter United Kingdom

Every item below must be in place before your pet can travel. We manage and verify each one.

Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 microchip required, fitted before the rabies vaccination. If the order is reversed, the vaccination must be repeated. Source: GOV.UK, Bring your pet dog, cat or ferret to Great Britain, checked 13 July 2026.
Rabies vaccination
Current rabies vaccination required, given after the microchip is fitted. Source: GOV.UK, checked 13 July 2026.
Rabies titre test
Not required. Fiji is one of the small group of countries on Great Britain's Part 1 list of low-rabies-risk territories, the same Annex II grouping used under EU Implementing Regulation 2026/636. A pet travelling direct from Fiji only needs a 21 full-day wait after the rabies vaccination before travel; no blood sample is needed. Source: GOV.UK, Where you're travelling from, and European Commission Food Safety, Listing of territories and non-EU countries, checked 13 July 2026.
Quarantine
No routine quarantine for a pet that completes the process correctly. An animal arriving with missing or invalid paperwork can be held at the owner's expense. Source: GOV.UK, checked 13 July 2026.
Import permit
No APHA import licence is needed for a non-commercial move of up to 5 pets travelling with, or within 5 days of, their owner. A pet flown as unaccompanied manifest cargo needs pre-notifying on IPAFFS (Import of Products, Animals, Food and Feed System) at least 1 working day before arrival. Source: GOV.UK, IPAFFS guidance, checked 13 July 2026.
Health certificate
Great Britain Pet Health Certificate, issued by a vet in Fiji no more than 10 days before travel, recording the microchip, vaccination date and, for dogs, the tapeworm treatment. Source: GOV.UK, checked 13 July 2026.
Export permit (Fiji)
Export health certification issued by the Biosecurity Authority of Fiji (BAF) after a booked final pre-export veterinary inspection. Processing takes 3-5 working days once all documentation is complete. Source: baf.com.fj, Bringing Cats, Dogs and Other Pets to Fiji, checked 13 July 2026.
Costs

What this route typically costs

BAF export inspection and certification: BAF does not publish a fixed fee schedule online. Budget FJD 150-400 for the vet consultation and BAF admin, and confirm the current figure directly with BAF.
Great Britain Pet Health Certificate, issued by the same or a second vet in Fiji: a similar range, often bundled into the same appointment.
Tapeworm treatment (dogs only): FJD 40-100 (roughly GBP 15-35)
IATA-compliant travel crate: GBP 60-250 depending on breed size
Cargo from Nadi to London via a Los Angeles, Sydney or Auckland transfer: GBP 1,500-4,000, driven mainly by crate size and how many carriers are involved
Specialist pet relocation agent (recommended, since no single airline flies this route end to end): GBP 400-900
Typical all-in total for a mid-size dog: GBP 2,200-5,600. This is a planning estimate, not a quote; get current figures from an agent before booking dates.

Critical points to read before you book

No airline flies Nadi to London directly, for passengers or cargo. Fiji Airways' own network stops at Los Angeles, Sydney and Auckland, so every pet needs at least one live-animal transfer to a carrier that actually flies into the UK. Book this through a specialist agent, not a standard interline ticket.

Routing a live animal through a US hub such as Los Angeles adds a layer of US transit and customs handling on top of the UK paperwork. Confirm with the ground handler at the connecting airport that they are set up for a live-animal transfer before you commit to that routing.

Fiji's listed status removes the rabies titre test, but it does not remove the tapeworm treatment for dogs. Owners sometimes assume 'no titre test' means 'no extra treatment', and miss the 24-120 hour window.

Airlines

Carriers approved for this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know which carriers to use and how to book.

British Airways / IAG Cargo
No routing from Nadi. Handles the final leg into Heathrow once the animal has reached a connecting hub on another carrier. Bookings go through PetAir UK or IAG Cargo, not the passenger side of the airline.
Cargo Only
Qantas
Realistic transfer option via Sydney. Fiji Airways flies Nadi to Sydney daily; Qantas can carry the animal onward from Sydney towards the UK on a separate cargo booking.
Cargo Only
Emirates
Via its Dubai hub. Not reachable directly from Nadi, so this only works as the second leg of a routing that starts on Fiji Airways to Sydney or another connecting point.
Cargo Only

The rules for bringing a pet into United Kingdom

United Kingdom keeps its requirements reasonable, though a few steps have fixed timing. Map those out first and the rest falls into place.

How to keep this move on track

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.

FAQ

Common questions about Fiji to United Kingdom pet transport

Listed. Fiji sits on Great Britain’s Part 1 group of low-rabies-risk countries, the same category used under the EU’s Annex II framework. A pet only needs a microchip, a rabies vaccination and a 21-day wait, with no titre test and no three-month hold. Source: GOV.UK, checked 13 July 2026.
No. Fiji Airways has no scheduled route to London, and no other carrier offers a direct Nadi to UK connection. Every pet has to transfer to a second carrier, most commonly via Sydney or Los Angeles, as a dedicated cargo booking rather than a standard ticket.
Yes. The listed-country status removes the rabies titre test and the three-month wait, but it does not touch the separate tapeworm rule. Dogs entering Great Britain need praziquantel or an equivalent wormer 24 to 120 hours before landing, recorded on the health certificate. Cats are exempt.
A vet-completed export certificate, followed by a booked final inspection with a BAF veterinary officer. All supporting documents need to reach BAF at least 7 days before that inspection, and processing after the inspection takes 3 to 5 working days. Source: baf.com.fj, checked 13 July 2026.
