The Estonia to Spain pet import process

Each step must be completed in a precise sequence. Start early. We manage every stage and deadline.

1
Confirm microchip is in place (ISO 11784/11785)
Responsible: Estonian vet
If not yet chipped, do this before any vaccination.
2
Ensure rabies vaccination is current
Responsible: Estonian vet
Primary vaccination: 21 days before travel. Booster within valid period: immediately effective.
3
Prepare EU pet passport or AHC
Responsible: VTA-authorised Estonian vet (AHC also needs VTA endorsement)
Passport: issued once, valid for life of pet with current vaccinations. AHC: within 10 days of entry into Spain.
4
Book flight from Tallinn to Spain
Responsible: Owner
3-4 weeks before travel. Avoid Ryanair and Wizz Air for this route if travelling with a pet.
5
Travel to Spain
Responsible: Owner + airline
Travel day. Tallinn to Madrid or Barcelona via connection is typically 5-9 hours.

Critical points to read before you book

Budget carriers dominate the Tallinn-to-Spain market. Ryanair and Wizz Air both have routes to Spain from TLL but neither accepts pets. Book with a full-service carrier: Lufthansa, LOT, airBaltic, or Iberia via their connecting networks.

Spain requires dogs to be microchipped under its own national law as well as the EU regulation. If your Estonian chip complies with ISO 11784/11785 (which it should if it is a 15-digit chip issued in Estonia), it is accepted in Spain.

April 2026 passport restriction: EU pet passports are for EU-resident owners only from 22 April 2026. Most Estonian pet owners are EU residents. Non-EU nationals in Estonia should arrange a VTA-endorsed AHC instead.

Spain's border checks for intra-EU pet movements are not systematic at airports, but airlines check documents at check-in. The passport or AHC is also useful if Spanish authorities request it at any point during your stay.

Airlines

Carriers approved for this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know which carriers to use and how to book.

Ryanair
Ryanair operates routes from Tallinn to Spain (Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante, Malaga) but does not accept pets in cabin or as cargo. Not suitable for pet transport.
Not Suitable
airBaltic
TLL connects to airBaltic's RIX hub, with connections to Spanish cities. Small pets in-cabin on airBaltic. A practical option for the Riga-to-Spain routing.
Cabin and Cargo
Iberia
Spain's national carrier may be available for cargo connections from European hubs to Madrid (MAD) or Barcelona (BCN). Does not fly from Tallinn directly. Small pets in cabin on Iberia EU routes.
Cabin and Cargo
Lufthansa
Via FRA (Frankfurt), then FRA to MAD or BCN. Lufthansa accepts small pets in-cabin and larger pets as cargo. Frankfurt Animal Lounge for cargo connections.
Cabin and Cargo
LOT Polish Airlines
Via WAW (Warsaw), then WAW to Spanish cities. LOT accepts small pets in cabin. A budget alternative for the TLL-WAW-ESP routing.

Spain entry requirements at a glance

Bringing a pet into Spain is one of the simpler processes. Cover the core requirements and you should have few surprises.

Getting the details right

Work backwards from your travel date and add a buffer. Fixed waiting periods mean a single slipped appointment can push the whole move back by weeks.

Check the airline’s crate size and labelling rules early. An undersized or wrongly labelled crate is a frequent reason pets are refused at check-in.

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

FAQ

Common questions about Estonia to Spain pet transport

Yes, for non-commercial movement. EU rules allow up to five dogs, cats, or ferrets to travel with an owner in a non-commercial move, as long as each has a valid EU pet passport or AHC and meets all vaccination and microchip requirements. Each animal needs its own documentation. Some airlines limit the total number of pets per passenger, so check with your chosen carrier before booking.
You should ensure the vaccination is current on the date of entry into Spain, not just on the date of departure from Estonia. If the vaccination expires mid-journey or very shortly after arrival, get a booster before travel. A lapsed vaccination at the Spanish border, even if technically in a transit situation, puts your pet’s entry at risk.
Spain does not routinely check EU pet passports or AHCs at airports for intra-EU arrivals. Checks happen primarily at airline check-in and, if applicable, on entry from non-EU countries. However, you must carry the documents. Spanish authorities can request them at any time, and in the event of any animal health concern, documentation will be checked.
