Estonia to Australia is a long, well-planned route. Australia treats all EU member states as Group 3 countries, which means the same RNATT blood titre test, DAFF import permit, and 10-day Mickleham quarantine apply to pets from Tallinn as …
Each step must be completed in a precise sequence. Start early. We manage every stage and deadline.
1
Microchip (ISO 11784/11785) and administer rabies vaccination
Responsible: Estonian vet
Start here. Microchip before vaccination. Allow 30 days after vaccination before blood draw for RNATT.
2
RNATT blood draw at DAFF-approved laboratory
Responsible: Estonian vet + DAFF-approved laboratory
At least 30 days after vaccination. The blood collection date must be at least 180 days before export to Australia. This is the critical deadline.
3
Apply for DAFF import permit online
Responsible: Owner
Apply as soon as you have a travel plan. Processing can take several weeks. DAFF portal: agriculture.gov.au.
4
Book cargo from Tallinn via hub airport to Australia
Responsible: Owner or agent
At least 6 weeks before travel. Cargo spaces on Europe-to-Australia routes fill quickly. Confirm live animal acceptance.
5
Obtain official EU health certificate from Estonian VTA-authorised vet
Responsible: Officially authorised vet + Estonian VTA endorsement
Within 10 days of departure from Estonia.
6
Travel to Australia (connections via European hub to Singapore or Doha, then to Australian city)
Responsible: Owner + airline cargo team
On travel date. Allow 2-3 days for the full journey including connections.
7
10-day mandatory quarantine at Mickleham (PEQF), Melbourne
Responsible: DAFF Mickleham facility
Immediately on arrival. Cannot be shortened. DAFF vet staff manage all care.

Critical points to read before you book
The 180-day rule is absolute. The RNATT blood collection date must be at least 180 days before your pet leaves Estonia for Australia. You cannot shorten this. If you miss the window, you restart the RNATT process.
Estonia is Group 3 under DAFF. The same RNATT and quarantine requirements that apply to UK and most EU countries apply to Estonia. There is no fast-track for EU member states.
Mickleham is in Melbourne. If you are moving to Sydney, Brisbane, or Perth, your pet arrives in Melbourne, completes quarantine there, and then travels domestically to your destination city. Plan and cost for this additional leg.
DAFF-approved laboratories for the RNATT are not all in Estonia. Blood samples are typically shipped to approved labs in Europe, Australia, or the USA. Your vet needs to know the correct cold-chain procedure for international blood sample shipment.

Why the RNATT sets your departure date
The RNATT (Rabies Neutralising Antibody Titre Test) is the step that controls everything. DAFF requires the blood sample to be collected at a DAFF-approved laboratory at least 180 days before the export date. That 180-day clock starts on the blood collection date, not the date results come back.
The sequence is: microchip first, then rabies vaccination, wait at least 30 days, then draw blood for the RNATT. You then wait for the result (typically 2-4 weeks depending on the laboratory) and once you have a passing result (the RNATT measures whether your pet has adequate rabies antibodies), you count 180 days forward from the blood draw date to find your earliest possible travel window.
In practice, this means you need to draw blood for the RNATT roughly 6-7 months before you want your pet in Australia. Get this done early, before you have a confirmed relocation date if possible. The RNATT can be passed and held for up to 24 months (verify with DAFF) before the 180-day period needs to start.
Routing from Tallinn to Australian cities
Tallinn Airport (TLL) has no direct route to Australia. Your pet will travel as cargo via at least one European hub. The most practical options are:
Via Amsterdam (KLM): KLM operates TLL to AMS connections and KLM Cargo has a well-established Australia service from Schiphol. This is a frequently used routing for Baltic-to-Australia pet moves.
Via Frankfurt (Lufthansa connections): Tallinn to Frankfurt, then Lufthansa or partner carriers to Singapore or Bangkok, then onwards to Australian cities. The Frankfurt Animal Lounge provides good intermediate handling.
Via Helsinki (Finnair): The TLL-HEL leg is short (45 minutes). From Helsinki, Finnair Cargo operates to Singapore and Australia on certain routes.
Budget around EUR 1,500 to EUR 4,000 for the cargo leg alone, depending on crate size and routing. Book at least 6 weeks ahead, and confirm your cargo agent has confirmed live animal acceptance on all legs of the route before you book anything else.
FAQ
Common questions about Estonia to Australia pet transport
Yes. Australia classifies Estonia as a Group 3 country, the same category as the UK, most of the EU, and the USA. The full Group 3 process applies: RNATT blood draw at least 180 days before export, a DAFF import permit, and 10 mandatory days at Mickleham quarantine in Melbourne. EU membership does not change Australia’s classification of Estonia.
At least 7 months from starting the process, and typically 8-9 months in practice. The RNATT blood draw must happen at least 180 days (just under 6 months) before your pet travels. Add time for vaccination sequencing before the RNATT, permit processing, and health certificate timing.
At Mickleham Post-Entry Quarantine Facility (PEQF) in Melbourne. All dogs and cats entering Australia from Group 3 countries must complete 10 days here, regardless of their final destination in Australia. If you are moving to Sydney, Brisbane, or Perth, you arrange domestic transport after quarantine release.
No airline offers a direct Tallinn to Australia pet cargo service. The route is operated via connections: KLM via Amsterdam Schiphol is a reliable option, as is Lufthansa via Frankfurt. From the European hub, Singapore Airlines or Qatar Airways typically carry the Australia leg. Confirm live animal acceptance on all connecting legs when booking.
