Pet Transport from Czech Republic to Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which applies its own veterinary import standards. The most important of these for Czech pet owners is the one-year rabies vaccination rule. Even if your Czech vaccination certificate shows a three-year validity (which is standard under EU protocols), Kazakhstan counts only 12 months from the date of vaccination for import purposes.

Check the vaccination date before booking flights. If your pet was vaccinated more than 12 months before the planned travel date, a booster is required. Your SVS-authorised vet can administer the booster and update the records; factor in the cost and the post-vaccination interval if a new shot is needed.

The second consideration is the health certificate format. Kazakhstan, as an EAEU member, may require specific wording or additional fields beyond the standard EU Regulation 576/2013 format. Contact the Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Committee (or use a pet transport agent experienced in Central Asian moves) to confirm the exact current format before your SVS vet issues the certificate. Correcting a certificate after SVS endorsement is time-consuming.

Czech pet exports require two steps: an official vet examination by an SVS-authorised vet, and an endorsement from SVS (Státní veterinární správa). The certificate examination must fall within 10 days of travel, and the SVS endorsement adds one to two working days on top of that.

SVS-authorised official vets are listed on the SVS website (svscr.cz) by region. Book your appointment at least five to six days before travel to allow comfortable time for the SVS endorsement. Take your pet’s full vaccination history, microchip documentation, and the Kazakh Veterinary Committee’s confirmed format requirements to the appointment, so the vet can issue a certificate that meets all the destination-specific fields Kazakhstan needs.

For most standard pet exports, the SVS process is smooth and well-organised. Kazakhstan adds some complexity around certificate wording, but an experienced SVS vet familiar with non-EU destinations will have encountered similar requirements before.

There are no direct flights from Prague Václav Havel Airport (PRG) to Almaty International Airport (ALA) or Astana International Airport (NQZ) in Kazakhstan. The standard cargo routing is via Turkish Airlines through Istanbul Atatürk (IST), covering both the PRG-IST and IST-ALA legs under Turkish Airlines Cargo.

The total journey from Prague to Almaty is typically 10 to 14 hours including the Istanbul connection. This is a long cargo journey: ensure the IATA-compliant crate is sized correctly for your pet to stand at full height, turn around, and lie down, and that water provision is secure within the crate.

Lufthansa via Frankfurt is an alternative, with connections from Frankfurt to ALA via IST. The Frankfurt Animal Lounge provides professional temporary care during longer layovers. Air Astana does not operate from Prague directly; connections from Prague to an Air Astana hub (Amsterdam or Frankfurt) are possible but add significant complexity to the routing.

On arrival at ALA, the Kazakh Veterinary Committee carries out a brief veterinary customs check. This is a documentation inspection, not a quarantine. Pets with the import permit (if required), the health certificate, microchip, and a rabies vaccination within the one-year window are cleared.
