Importing Your Pet to Turkey
Moderate to importTurkey has its own pet import requirements that are separate from EU rules. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (TRGM) administers animal import controls. Dogs and cats entering Turkey require a valid microchip (ISO 11784/11785), an up-to-date rabies vaccination, and a health certificate endorsed by the official veterinary authority of the origin country.
Turkey requires the health certificate to be issued within 10 days of travel for most origins. Some origin countries also require their certificates to be apostilled or endorsed by the Turkish consulate, so check the specific requirements for your origin country well in advance.
Istanbul Airport handles the highest volume of pet imports into Turkey. There is a dedicated veterinary control point at the airport. Pets from non-approved origins may face additional examination on arrival.

Health certificate and apostille requirements
Turkey requires health certificates from some origin countries to have an apostille (a Hague Convention authentication stamp) or consulate endorsement in addition to the standard government veterinary stamp. The requirement varies by origin country.
For pets from the EU: an EU AHC endorsed by the origin country’s vet authority is accepted. From the UK: an AHC endorsed by APHA, often with an apostille. From the US: a USDA APHIS-endorsed health certificate. Check with the Turkish consulate in your origin country for the most current requirements before arranging documentation.
Breed restrictions in Turkey
Turkey has restrictions on certain breeds. Pit Bull Terrier types, American Staffordshire Terrier, Bull Terrier, and related breeds are subject to specific rules. These breeds may require additional permits or may not be permitted without specific conditions.
If you are travelling with a breed that might fall under restricted categories, contact TRGM or a Turkish pet transport specialist before booking flights. Rules can change and it is better to verify in advance than face refusal at the border.
