Importing Your Pet to Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has strict pet import rules reflecting its rabies-free status for dogs. The DAPH (Department of Animal Production and Health) administers all pet imports. An import permit must be obtained before travel. All dogs require microchip, rabies vaccination, a titre test with a minimum result of 0.5 IU/ml, and a government-endorsed health certificate.

After a successful titre test, a 3-month waiting period applies before Sri Lanka entry. This means the total preparation time, from starting vaccinations to arrival in Sri Lanka, is at least 6-7 months for most origins.

Quarantine on arrival is mandatory for most origins. The quarantine period is typically 3-7 days for compliant pets. Longer quarantine applies for pets where the documentation has any gaps.

Titre test and waiting period for Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka requires a rabies titre test for dogs from most origins. The blood draw must be at least 30 days after the rabies vaccination. The test must be conducted at an internationally recognised laboratory. A minimum result of 0.5 IU/ml is required.

After a successful titre test, a 3-month waiting period must pass before the dog can enter Sri Lanka. Plan your timeline from the vaccination date: vaccination (month 1) → titre test blood draw (month 2) → waiting period (months 3-5) → travel (month 6+). Start this process as early as possible.

Quarantine facilities and permit application

Apply for an import permit from DAPH well in advance of your travel date. Required documents: microchip certificate, vaccination records, titre test results, and a completed DAPH application form.
