Importing Your Pet to Nepal
Moderate to importNepal’s published pet rules are short. The Embassy of Nepal in London lists a health certificate issued within 10 days of arrival in Nepal, a rabies vaccination card and notice to the Animal Quarantine Office 72 hours before arrival. The embassy page does not name any country of origin or set different rules by origin.
Nepal’s own sources say little about dogs and cats, so some points rest on guidance from other governments, and that guidance is dated. New Zealand’s Ministry for Primary Industries (guidance dated 14 January 2016, which says it is subject to change) says no import permit is required and no rabies antibody test is needed. Check each point with the Animal Quarantine Office before you travel.
Import Requirements
Every requirement below is taken from an official government page, and each one links to the page it comes from. The rules were last checked on 5 October 2026. They can change, so check the linked page again before you book.
Who is in charge
- The Department of Livestock Services' Animal Quarantine Division is Nepal's national legal and technical authority for animal quarantine. DAFF Australia's Micor Nepal dogs and cats pages name the Animal Quarantine Division as the contact for importing animals, with the email ktmquarantine@gmail.com (the Animal Quarantine Office, Budhanilkantha, Kathmandu).
Applies to all animals, including pet dogs and cats.

- Embassy of Nepal, London, 'Taking Pets to Nepal' (fee note effective 17 July 2018): the page gives one list of Animal Quarantine Office requirements (health certificate issued within 10 days of arrival, rabies vaccination card, 72 hours' notice) without naming any country of origin or setting different rules by origin; the page does not say which travellers it covers. No official page read sets different rules by origin, so a single group is recorded.
Applies to pet dogs and cats from any country.

NZ MPI OMAR AE-09-NP (2016, https://www.mpi.govt.nz/dmsdocument/10991-dogs-and-cats-to-nepal-omar) says the veterinary health certificate must be not more than 7 days old at import. Nepal's own embassy page is preferred; a certificate issued within 7 days satisfies both.
Other vaccines and tests
- Under the Animal Health and Livestock Services Rules, 2056 (2000, first amended 2063), Nepal Law Commission English translation (rule 6(1)), where an up-to-date authenticated certificate of vaccination, given in the exporting country, against the diseases present in Nepal is submitted, the Quarantine Officer keeps the animal in quarantine, checks it against its certificate and identification, and may release it if healthy. The rules do not name the diseases for dogs and cats.

Quarantine
- Under the Animal Health and Livestock Services Rules, 2056 (2000, first amended 2063), Nepal Law Commission English translation (rule 6), an animal imported without an authenticated vaccination certificate, or whose identity cannot be confirmed or which is not healthy, is kept at the quarantine station. The fixed periods listed in the rules are for livestock and poultry diseases (no dog or cat disease is listed); other periods are set to match the incubation period.
Applies to all imported animals, including pet dogs and cats.
Animal Health and Livestock Services Rules, 2056 (2000), English, checked 5 October 2026 - Per New Zealand MPI OMAR AE-09-NP, Dogs and Cats to Nepal (signed 14 January 2016, which says these are guidelines only and subject to change): dogs and cats can enter Nepal with no quarantine period, provided an entry is lodged with the veterinary quarantine officer 3 to 4 days before arrival. Nepal's own Animal Health and Livestock Services Rules, 2056 (rule 6(1)) say that where an authenticated vaccination certificate is submitted the Quarantine Officer keeps the animal in quarantine and may release it once it is found healthy and its identity checked; no fixed period is set for dogs and cats (see the quarantine and other_vaccines_and_tests entries from the rules). So expect an arrival check at the quarantine office rather than a set quarantine period.
Applies to pet dogs and cats with the required documents.

Documents, notice and the permit question
The Embassy of Nepal in London says the owner should tell the Animal Quarantine Office the arrival time at Tribhuvan International Airport 72 hours before arrival, by email to ktmquarantine@gmail.com with flight details, passport copy, health certificate and rabies vaccine card. The Kathmandu office’s own citizen’s charter gives 48 hours’ notice for importers in general, so aim for the longer period.
The health certificate should be issued within 10 days of arrival in Nepal and is valid for 30 days. A rabies vaccination card is required, and copies of the certificate and the card go to the Animal Quarantine Office before arrival.
Nepal does not state when the rabies vaccination must be given. New Zealand’s 2016 guidance asks for it at least 30 days and not more than 12 months before entry. DAFF’s Micor entry for Nepal (reviewed 29 September 2021) says the health certificate must show a microchip number.
New Zealand’s guidance also asks for dogs to be vaccinated against canine distemper, canine parvovirus and infectious canine hepatitis, and for cats to be vaccinated against feline panleucopenia and cat flu. It sets a minimum age of 12 weeks at shipment and allows up to 2 dogs or cats.
On import permits, New Zealand’s guidance says none is required for pet dogs and cats. The Embassy of Nepal in London lists only a health certificate, a rabies vaccination card and advance notice, and says its own recommendation letter is not mandatory.
What happens on arrival
Under the Animal Health and Livestock Services Rules, 2056, animal quarantine check posts are set up at international airports. In practice that means Tribhuvan International Airport, served by the Animal Quarantine Office, Kathmandu.
The rules have the Quarantine Officer keep an animal that arrives with an authenticated vaccination certificate in quarantine, check it against its certificate and identification, and release it if it is healthy. They set no fixed quarantine period for dogs and cats, so expect an arrival check at the quarantine office rather than a set stay.
