Importing Your Pet to Egypt

Moderate to import

Egypt requires an import permit from GOVS (General Organisation for Veterinary Services) before importing a pet. Permits must be obtained at least 2 weeks before travel. Pets must be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies (and other diseases as specified).

The health certificate from the origin country must be endorsed by the national vet authority and, for some origins, also endorsed by the Egyptian consulate or embassy. This double-endorsement requirement adds time and cost to the process.

Cairo International Airport handles the majority of pet imports into Egypt and has a GOVS inspection office. Pets arriving without the import permit may be refused entry or detained.

Import permit and consulate endorsement for Egypt

Apply for the import permit from GOVS at least 3-4 weeks before travel. Required documents: microchip certificate, vaccination records, and a completed GOVS application form. The permit is issued with a specific entry window.

In addition to GOVS permission, pets from many origin countries also need their health certificate endorsed by the Egyptian consulate in the origin country. The consulate endorsement is separate from the GOVS permit. Allow time for both.

Restrictions and special rules in Egypt

Egypt has restrictions on certain dog breeds, particularly large or ‘fighting’ breeds. The list includes Pit Bull types, Rottweiler, and similar. Check with GOVS for the current breed restriction list before travel.

Egypt also has rules about the number of pets a traveller can bring. Generally, one or two pets per person is acceptable for personal travel. Importing multiple animals for commercial purposes requires a separate process and may not be permitted for individuals.
