Importing Your Pet to Cyprus

Moderate to import

Cyprus is an EU member state with strict biosecurity controls reflecting its island status and historically rabies-free status. DVS (Department of Veterinary Services) administers pet imports. EU/EFTA pets use EU Pet Passports. Non-EU pets need an AHC endorsed by the origin country’s official vet authority.

Cyprus requires advance notification for all pet arrivals. For pets from non-EU countries, DVS must be contacted before travel and the relevant documentation submitted for pre-approval. Titre test requirements from some origins apply with a 3-month waiting period.

Larnaca International Airport is the main entry point for pets entering Cyprus. There is a DVS inspection office at the airport.

Advance notification and non-EU entry to Cyprus

Before bringing a pet from outside the EU into Cyprus, contact DVS in advance. For some origins, pre-approval is required before the pet is allowed to travel. This is particularly important for pets from countries where rabies is endemic.

From the UK: AHC endorsed by APHA, plus pre-notification to DVS. From the US: USDA APHIS-endorsed health certificate, plus pre-notification. From countries requiring a titre test: blood drawn at least 30 days post-vaccination, minimum 0.5 IU/ml result, then a 3-month waiting period before Cyprus entry.

Re-entry to other EU countries from Cyprus

Cyprus uses the EU Pet Travel Scheme, so pets with EU Pet Passports can travel freely between Cyprus and other EU member states. Note that direct routes between Cyprus and some neighbouring non-EU countries (Turkey, Lebanon, etc.) may have different rules.

Cyprus vets can issue EU Pet Passports for pets registered in Cyprus. If you are relocating from Cyprus to another EU country, ensure your pet’s EU Pet Passport is up to date before travel. For return trips to the UK, an AHC is required.
