Colombia isn't on the EU's lists of exempt countries, so your pet needs a rabies antibody test before it can fly to Spain. The blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after the primary vaccination. The EU health certificate is valid for 10 days from the date the official vet issues it.

Which Spain rules depend on a pet coming from Colombia?

The EU sorts non-EU countries into groups, and Colombia falls in “Non-listed third countries and territories”.

Common questions

It must be done by an official laboratory designated under Article 37 of Regulation (EU) 2017/625, or by a laboratory in a third country listed in Annex VIII to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2021/404. The blood sample must be taken at least 30 days after the primary vaccination and not less than 90 days before the certificate is issued.

Pets from outside the EU must enter through an authorised travellers' point of entry. Madrid-Barajas is staffed Monday to Friday 9:00 to 20:00 and Saturday 9:00 to 14:30, with one working day's notice by email for Sundays and public holidays. Barcelona's post is open weekdays 9 to 22, with 10 to 22 at weekends and on public holidays.

The EU health certificate is valid for 10 days from issue, until the entry checks.

Avianca's pet help page says pets up to 70 kg including the container may fly in the hold. Dogs and cats up to 10 kg including the container may fly in the cabin. In its Spain section it says it is important to treat the pet with praziquantel at least 48 hours before the flight.

MAPA lists tapeworm treatment only as an extra requirement for travel to Ireland, Malta, Finland, Norway and Northern Ireland. Avianca's pet page still calls praziquantel treatment at least 48 hours before the flight important for travel to Spain.
