Chile is EU-listed: what this means for the documentation process
EU Regulation 576/2013 divides third countries into two categories: listed countries, whose rabies controls the EU recognises as equivalent, and non-listed countries, which require a FAVN titre test and a 3-month wait. Chile is listed. Source: food.ec.europa.eu, 2026.
That means Chilean pets entering Italy need only a valid ISO microchip, a current rabies vaccination (21-day wait after a primary course), and the SAG-endorsed EU-format health certificate. SAG (Servicio Agricola y Ganadero) is Chile’s official agricultural and veterinary authority. A SAG-registered vet issues the certificate within 10 days of travel; SAG endorses it before departure. The whole documentation process takes four to six weeks rather than the five months required from non-listed countries.
Hub routing from Santiago to Rome or Milan and Italy's breed law
There is no direct cargo service from Santiago (SCL) to Rome Fiumicino (FCO) or Milan Malpensa (MXP). LATAM and Iberia both connect SCL to Madrid (MAD), which has onward connections to Italian airports. Air France via Paris CDG is an alternative. Book cargo four to six weeks ahead, as space for live animals on transatlantic routes fills quickly.
Italy removed its national breed-specific legislation in 2009. Italian Ministry of Health vets carry out a documentary inspection at FCO or MXP on arrival, but no breed classification is applied. For Chilean families whose breed faces restrictions in Germany or France, Italy is a straightforward EU destination.
