Critical points to read before you book

Apply for the MAAIF import permit 8-10 weeks before travel. It is the prerequisite for Uganda entry. Do not finalise cargo bookings until the permit is confirmed.

This routing involves multiple connections. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance on each leg separately. Not all carriers accept pets on all segments.

Total transit of 18-28 hours is a significant journey. Discuss your pet's fitness to travel with your vet before making any bookings.

MAAIF is the competent authority; the permit is not optional. An animal arriving without the permit will not be cleared at Entebbe.

Airlines

Carriers approved for this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know which carriers to use and how to book.

Brussels Airlines via Brussels
Canada to Brussels (BRU) via transatlantic connections, then Brussels Airlines BRU-EBB direct. Brussels Airlines has direct Entebbe services as part of its East Africa network. A strong option for Canada-Uganda pet cargo.

Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa
Canada to Addis Ababa (ADD) via connections, then Ethiopian Cargo ADD-EBB. Ethiopian Airlines has the most extensive African route network and established live animal procedures.
Cargo Only
Kenya Airways via Nairobi
Routing via Nairobi (NBO), then NBO-EBB. Kenya Airways connects from Gulf or European hubs and NBO-EBB is a short East African hop. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance before booking.

MAAIF: Uganda's import authority

Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) at maaif.go.ug processes companion animal imports. The MAAIF import permit is the document that authorises your pet’s entry. Without it, the inspection team at Entebbe cannot clear your animal.

Apply with your pet’s details: microchip number, species, breed, vaccination history, and intended travel date. Eight to ten weeks of lead time is recommended. MAAIF is a functioning authority that processes permit applications from a range of countries, though turnaround times can vary. Follow up after submitting to confirm your application is in progress.

On arrival at Entebbe International Airport (EBB), MAAIF’s team inspects the permit alongside the CFIA health certificate. For pets from Canada with complete documentation, clearance proceeds without quarantine.

Canada to Entebbe: the two main routing options

Brussels Airlines via Brussels (BRU) and Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) are the two most commonly used options for Canada-to-Uganda pet cargo.

Brussels Airlines operates BRU-EBB directly as part of its established East Africa network. Getting from Toronto or Montreal to Brussels means a transatlantic hop on Air Canada or another carrier, followed by the Brussels Airlines East Africa service. This routing works well and Brussels Airlines is experienced on the BRU-EBB corridor.

Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD) gives access to Ethiopian Cargo’s extensive African network. ADD-EBB is a regular short hop within Ethiopian’s African operation. From Canada, reaching Addis involves connections through European or Gulf hubs. The overall routing is longer but Ethiopian’s live animal procedures on African routes are well established.

Kenya Airways via Nairobi (NBO) is a third option. NBO-EBB is a short East African regional service, and Kenya Airways connects from Gulf and European hubs. Total transit from Canada to Entebbe runs 18-28 hours depending on routing.

CFIA endorsement for Uganda

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) endorses health certificates for international pet exports. Your accredited vet prepares the health certificate; CFIA’s regional office then endorses it.

For Uganda, confirm that the certificate format meets Uganda’s specific import requirements, which differ from EU-format certificates. Your vet or a pet transport agent experienced in African exports will know the correct format. CFIA endorsement takes 1-5 working days through the regional office network.

Time the vet appointment and CFIA endorsement carefully within the 10-day validity window. A vet appointment 7-8 days before travel with 2-3 days buffer for endorsement is a practical approach.

FAQ

Common questions about Canada to Uganda pet transport

Uganda does not apply EU-style titre test requirements for pets from Canada. Current rabies vaccination, ISO microchip, CFIA-endorsed health certificate, and the MAAIF import permit are the core requirements. Confirm current requirements with MAAIF when applying for the permit.
Both are valid. Brussels Airlines via BRU-EBB is direct and has strong East Africa cargo experience. Ethiopian via ADD-EBB has the widest African network and established live animal procedures. Your choice may depend on flight availability and your transit hub preference. A pet transport agent can advise on which suits your dates.
Expect 18-28 hours total transit. The Brussels routing is typically 18-22 hours; the Addis Ababa routing 22-28 hours depending on connections. Both are significant journeys. Your vet should confirm fitness to travel before booking.
Budget CAD 3,500-9,500 all-in. Cargo fees from YYZ or YUL to EBB via hub are CAD 2,500-7,000 depending on your pet’s size. Add the CFIA certificate, MAAIF permit fee, crate, and agent costs. A transport agent is recommended for this route.
