Critical points to read before you book

The RAB import permit is the prerequisite for entry into Rwanda. Apply 8-10 weeks before travel and do not confirm flight bookings until the permit is in hand.

Canada to Rwanda requires at least two connections. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance on every individual leg before booking. Different airlines have different policies.

Rwanda itself is well organised for animal imports through the RAB, but the routing from Canada is complex and benefits from a pet transport agent's coordination.

Total transit times of 18-26 hours are significant. Your vet should confirm your pet's fitness to travel before booking.

Airlines

Carriers approved for this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know which carriers to use and how to book.

Brussels Airlines via Brussels
Canada to Brussels (BRU) via Air Canada or Air Transat to European hubs, then Brussels Airlines BRU-KGL direct. Brussels Airlines has strong East Africa cargo links and direct Kigali service. Recommended for most Canada-Rwanda routings.
Cargo Only
Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa
Canada to Addis Ababa (ADD) via Toronto or Montreal connections, then Ethiopian Cargo ADD-KGL. Ethiopian Airlines has the largest African cargo network and established live animal procedures.
Cargo Only
Air France via Paris CDG
Air Canada to Paris CDG, then connections via Ethiopian or Brussels Airlines to Kigali. Air France's Paris hub provides good connectivity to East Africa-bound carriers.
Cargo Only
KLM via Amsterdam
Air Canada or other carriers to Amsterdam (AMS), then KLM or connecting services to Kigali. Amsterdam is a well-connected hub for East Africa cargo.

Rwanda's RAB: professional and organised

The Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board is the competent authority for all animal imports into Rwanda. Its import permit process is one of the more professional in sub-Saharan Africa. Apply at rab.gov.rw at least eight weeks before travel.

Your application should include your pet’s microchip number, full vaccination history, breed, expected travel date, and the routing to Kigali. Once issued, the permit is the core document alongside the CFIA health certificate. Present both at Kigali International Airport (KGL) on arrival. The RAB inspection at KGL is a document and health check; for compliant arrivals from Canada, it proceeds without quarantine.

Routing from Canada to Kigali

No direct cargo service connects Canada to Kigali. The two most practical routings go via Brussels on Brussels Airlines, or via Addis Ababa on Ethiopian Airlines.

Brussels Airlines operates BRU-KGL directly and is part of the Lufthansa Group, with well-established East Africa cargo procedures. From Toronto or Montreal, Air Canada or other transatlantic carriers connect to Brussels. The Brussels routing is popular for pet transport on this corridor because Brussels Airlines has strong Kigali links and the connection at BRU is straightforward.

Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa is an alternative. Ethiopian Cargo has the most extensive African network of any carrier and operates ADD-KGL with regularity. Getting from Canada to Addis typically involves connections through European or Gulf hubs. Total transit from Canada to Kigali runs 18-26 hours; the Ethiopian routing can be slightly longer depending on the connecting point.

CFIA endorsement for Rwanda

Canada’s CFIA endorses health certificates for international pet exports. Your accredited vet issues the certificate; CFIA’s regional office endorses it. For Rwanda, confirm with your vet that the certificate covers Rwanda’s specific requirements, as the format differs from EU-destination certificates.

CFIA endorsement takes 1-5 working days through the regional office network. Allow time for this within the 10-day certificate validity window. A vet appointment at the start of the 10-day window with endorsement complete 2-3 days later gives sufficient margin for travel.

FAQ

Common questions about Canada to Rwanda pet transport

Apply at rab.gov.rw at least 8-10 weeks before travel. Provide your pet’s microchip number, vaccination records, breed, and travel date. The RAB processes applications and issues the permit, which you present at Kigali International Airport alongside the CFIA health certificate.
Brussels Airlines via Brussels (BRU-KGL direct) is the most commonly used option and has strong East Africa cargo experience. Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa (ADD-KGL) is an alternative with good live animal procedures. Use whichever fits your departure dates and confirmed cargo availability.
Rwanda does not apply EU-style titre test requirements for pets from Canada. Current rabies vaccination, ISO microchip, CFIA health certificate, and the RAB import permit are the required documents. Confirm current requirements with the RAB when you apply for the permit.
Expect 18-26 hours total transit via Brussels or Addis Ababa. This is a significant journey. Discuss your pet’s fitness to travel with your vet before booking.
