Rabies vaccination given, or a current booster confirmed.

Responsible: CFIA-accredited vet

Canadian International Health Certificate completed and endorsed by CFIA.

Responsible: CFIA-accredited vet, then CFIA official veterinarian

Cargo booking confirmed on Ethiopian Airlines' ET553/ET877 routing via Addis Ababa, or an alternative via Johannesburg.

Responsible: Owner or pet transport agent

Checklist

What your pet needs

Every item below must be completed and verified before your pet can travel. Expand each category for the detail.

Microchip
An ISO 11784/11785 microchip is standard practice and effectively assumed by every airline and agent on this route, though Malawi's published import conditions stop short of naming it a strict entry requirement.
Rabies vaccination
Required, given between 30 days and 12 months before arrival in Malawi. Puppies and kittens cannot be vaccinated before 3 months of age and need a further 30-day wait after that dose before travel.
Rabies titre test
Not required. Malawi does not ask for a rabies antibody titre test from a pet entering from any country, Canada included. Confirm the current position with DAHLD before travel regardless, since summarised guidance can lag an actual policy change.
Quarantine
No quarantine for a pet arriving with compliant paperwork. Non-compliant arrivals face quarantine where a facility exists, return to the country of origin, or, in the worst case, euthanasia, all at the owner's expense.
Import permit
Required from the Director of Animal Health at Malawi's Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development (DAHLD), Ministry of Agriculture. The exemption available to SADC member states (Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini and Zimbabwe) does not extend to Canada, so the full application applies. The permit, once issued, is valid for 6 months.
Health certificate
The Canadian International Health Certificate serves as the international veterinary health certificate and should be presented to DAHLD officials within 7 days of arrival in Malawi.
Export permit
No CFIA export permit for a personal pet. Export certification, a health certificate from a CFIA-accredited vet endorsed by an official CFIA veterinarian, clears the pet to leave.
Veterinary inspection
Clinical exam by a CFIA-accredited vet, confirming the pet is fit to travel and meets Malawi's stated health conditions.
Government endorsement
Malawi has no negotiated export certificate template with Canada, so CFIA's own Canadian International Health Certificate applies, checked against what Malawi's DAHLD expects. Book the CFIA endorsement appointment with plenty of advance notice, since a certificate cannot be endorsed after the pet has left Canada.
Health certificate
Canadian International Health Certificate, completed close to travel, covering identification, rabies vaccination and general health.

Carriers on this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. Confirm the operating carrier's current policy for every flight segment.

Ethiopian Airlines
Toronto to Addis Ababa nonstop, ET553, seven times a week on a Boeing 787, the only nonstop passenger service between Canada and continental Africa. Ethiopian's own ET877 then covers Addis Ababa to Lilongwe, seven times a week, also on a Boeing 787. A pet stays with one carrier for the entire journey, a genuinely rare thing on this pairing.
Cargo Only
British Airways
Covers a Canada-to-Heathrow connection through IAG Cargo, then on to Johannesburg, connecting to South African Airways' Johannesburg-Lilongwe regional service. Workable as a second option, though it adds two carrier changes rather than none.

Costs

What this route typically costs

CFIA-accredited vet consultation and Canadian International Health Certificate endorsement: CAD 250-500
Microchip and rabies vaccination, if not already current: CAD 80-160
DAHLD import permit: no fixed fee published; confirm directly with the Director of Animal Health
IATA-compliant travel crate: CAD 100-400
Cargo freight, Toronto to Lilongwe via Addis Ababa or Johannesburg: CAD 2,100-4,500
IPATA-registered pet transport agent fee: CAD 700-1,700
Total typical range: CAD 3,200-7,300

Critical points

No airline flies Toronto directly to Lilongwe. Ethiopian Airlines' single-carrier ET553/ET877 combination via Addis Ababa is the cleanest option; British Airways via Heathrow and Johannesburg needs two separate carrier changes instead.

The DAHLD import permit has no published turnaround time. Contact the Director of Animal Health at least 10-12 weeks before travel rather than assuming a quick response.

Because Canada isn't a SADC member state, the permit exemption open to Malawi's regional neighbours doesn't apply here. Assume the full application is needed, whatever the trip's purpose.

How Malawi handles incoming pets

Malawi keeps its requirements reasonable, though a few steps have fixed timing. Map those out first and the rest falls into place.

What experienced owners do

Check the airline’s crate size and labelling rules early. An undersized or wrongly labelled crate is a frequent reason pets are refused at check-in.

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Malawi doesn’t require a rabies antibody titre test from a pet arriving from any country, including Canada. A current rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before arrival is what’s asked for, not a blood test result.
Yes. An import permit from the Director of Animal Health at DAHLD is required unless the pet is arriving from a SADC member state. Canada doesn’t qualify for that exemption, so the full application is needed. The permit is valid for six months once issued.
Yes, on Ethiopian Airlines. Its ET553 flight covers Toronto to Addis Ababa nonstop, and ET877 continues nonstop from Addis Ababa to Lilongwe, both operated by Ethiopian on Boeing 787 aircraft, so the pet never changes carrier.
Not for a pet arriving with compliant documentation. Non-compliant arrivals can face quarantine where a facility exists, return to the country of departure, or euthanasia in the worst case, all at the owner’s expense.
Budget ten to fourteen weeks from a standing start. The DAHLD import permit, which has no published processing timeline, is the main driver of that window, not the vaccination or export certificate steps.
