Checklist

What your pet needs

Every item below must be completed and verified before your pet can travel. Expand each category for the detail.

Microchip
Not legally mandated, but a 15-digit chip meeting ISO 11784 or Annex A to ISO 11785 is expected on the documentation. Implanting it before the rabies vaccination keeps the paperwork consistent.
Rabies vaccination
Required for pets over three months old, given between 30 days and 12 months before arrival in Lesotho. Dogs also need current cover against distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, leptospirosis and parainfluenza; cats need feline viral rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia.
Rabies titre test
Not required for a pet arriving from Canada, or from any other country, under Lesotho's own import rules. Lesotho's Director of Animal Health does not operate a country-risk classification of the kind that drives a titre requirement elsewhere; the same 30-day-to-12-month vaccination window applies regardless of origin.
Quarantine
No quarantine for a pet arriving with complete, compliant paperwork. Non-compliant arrivals face quarantine where available, return to the country of origin, or, in the most serious unresolved cases, euthanasia at the importer's expense.
Import permit
An application for import with the Director of Animal Health is required, since Canada is not one of the SADC member nations (Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini or Zimbabwe) that get a waiver on this step.
Health certificate
International veterinary health certificate completed by the CFIA-accredited vet, covering vaccination history, microchip number and a clean bill of health, presented to Lesotho's veterinary officials on arrival.
Export permit
No CFIA export permit for a personal pet. Export certification, a health certificate from a CFIA-accredited vet endorsed by an official CFIA veterinarian, is the document that actually matters.
Veterinary inspection
Clinical exam by a CFIA-accredited vet confirming the pet is fit to travel and meets Lesotho's stated health conditions.
Government endorsement
Lesotho has no negotiated export certificate template with Canada, so CFIA's own Canadian International Health Certificate is used, checked against Lesotho's stated import conditions. Book the CFIA appointment with plenty of notice; the agency asks for advance booking and cannot endorse a certificate once the pet has already left the country.
Health certificate
Canadian International Health Certificate covering identification, rabies vaccination and general health, completed close to the travel date.

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. Confirm the operating carrier's current policy for every flight segment.

Ethiopian Airlines

Cargo Only
Airlink
The only scheduled carrier on the Johannesburg-Maseru sector, flying it roughly 21 times a week in about 65 minutes. Live-animal cargo maximum crate weight 32kg including the animal; book at least 48 hours ahead for this leg.
Cargo Only
British Airways
An alternative first-leg option via Heathrow to O.R. Tambo, Johannesburg, for owners whose schedule doesn't line up with Ethiopian's Toronto departure, connecting to the same Airlink Maseru hop.

Critical points

Moshoeshoe I International Airport has exactly one scheduled international destination: Johannesburg, flown only by Airlink. There is no way to avoid this transfer, and it runs on a separate air waybill from the long-haul leg.

Ethiopian Airlines' Toronto-Addis Ababa service is genuinely the only nonstop passenger route between Canada and continental Africa, which makes it worth booking around even if it isn't the cheapest fare on the route.

The Airlink Johannesburg-Maseru leg needs booking at least 48 hours ahead and has a 32kg maximum crate weight including the animal. Confirm this fits your pet and crate before committing to the long-haul booking.

Lesotho's own rules ask for no titre test from any country, but that's Lesotho's policy to change. Confirm the current position with the Director of Animal Health close to travel.

Lesotho entry requirements at a glance

The path into Lesotho is straightforward to follow once you know the steps. Give the time-sensitive items priority and check the details below.

Getting the details right

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.

Get your pet used to the travel crate weeks in advance. A calm, crate-familiar animal travels far better than one meeting the crate for the first time at the airport.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Lesotho’s own import rules do not require a rabies titre test from any country of origin. What is required is a rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before arrival, current core vaccinations, a microchip, and an import permit from the Director of Animal Health.
No, and there’s no direct flight to Lesotho from anywhere. Moshoeshoe I International Airport in Maseru has exactly one scheduled international connection, to Johannesburg, flown only by Airlink. Ethiopian Airlines’ nonstop Toronto-Addis Ababa service, the only nonstop link between Canada and Africa, connects on to Johannesburg for the first two legs.
The Director of Animal Health, within Lesotho’s Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition. Canada isn’t a SADC member state, so the permit is required rather than waived. Apply as early as convenient; the office doesn’t publish a fixed processing time.
Ethiopian Airlines operates the only nonstop passenger service between Canada and continental Africa, Toronto to Addis Ababa, and separately runs up to three flights a day from Addis Ababa to Johannesburg. That keeps a pet under one airline’s network for most of the journey before the final Airlink hop into Maseru.
It runs on a separate air waybill from the long-haul leg, usually a different airline and terminal. A ground agent at O.R. Tambo manages the handoff between the arriving flight and the Airlink departure, typically the same day. The Airlink leg needs booking at least 48 hours ahead.
Eight to twelve weeks in most cases. There’s no titre test on the Lesotho side, so the main lead times are the import permit application and coordinating the Ethiopian Airlines booking with the Airlink connection into Maseru.
