Critical points
Kazakhstan applies a one-year rabies vaccination validity rule. Even if your Canadian certificate shows three years, Kazakhstan may require it to be within one year of the vaccination date.
The KVCS permit is mandatory. Secure it before booking flights.
Almaty ALA is the main entry point with established KVCS veterinary inspection. If using Astana NQZ, confirm KVCS inspection availability there.
The YYZ-IST-ALA routing is long, around 16-20 hours. Ensure your pet's crate is correctly sized for comfort and that water provision is in place.
Kazakhstan's one-year rabies rule: check the date early
Canada’s standard rabies vaccination protocols often give pets a three-year validity certificate. Kazakhstan, as part of the Eurasian Economic Union, applies a one-year validity rule for imported animals. This is a common point of confusion for Canadian pet owners.
Before doing anything else, check the date on your pet’s most recent rabies vaccination certificate. If it was given more than a year before your intended travel date, you will need a booster. Your CFIA-accredited vet can administer the booster and update the records.
A new rabies vaccination may require a brief interval before the health certificate can be issued. Identify this early in your planning, not a week before departure, so you have time to accommodate any waiting period.
The KVCS import permit process
The Committee for Veterinary Control and Supervision (KVCS), operating under Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Agriculture, issues the import permits for all companion animals entering Kazakhstan. Contact the KVCS well in advance of travel, at least eight to ten weeks, to initiate the application.
You will need your pet’s microchip number, vaccination history, origin country (Canada), and planned entry airport. Almaty International Airport (ALA) is the recommended entry point as it has the most established KVCS veterinary inspection infrastructure.
Kazakhstan is an increasingly popular destination for international relocations, and the KVCS process, while bureaucratic, is a defined one. A pet transport agent experienced in Central Asian moves can manage the KVCS application on your behalf and ensure the documentation format matches Kazakhstan’s EEU-aligned standards.
Toronto to Almaty: a long but manageable journey
The most practical routing from Canada to Kazakhstan is via Turkish Airlines through Istanbul. YYZ to IST on the transatlantic leg, then IST to ALA. The total journey from Toronto to Almaty typically takes 16 to 20 hours including the Istanbul connection.
This is a long journey for a pet. Ensure your IATA-compliant crate is the correct size for your specific animal, allowing it to stand at full height, turn around, and lie down comfortably. Water and absorbent lining should be in place before the crate is checked in.
Turkish Airlines Cargo has established live animal procedures at both YYZ and IST. Confirm acceptance for your pet’s species, breed, and size before booking, and ask specifically about any temperature restrictions that may apply.
