Preparing a pet for Canada to Armenia involves managing two separate bureaucratic processes that need to converge on your travel date. On the Canadian side, you need a CFIA export health certificate from a CFIA-accredited veterinarian, endorsed by the CFIA regional office. On the Armenian side, you need an import permit from the State Service for Food Safety (SSFS) at ssfs.am.

The SSFS permit is the longer lead item. Apply for it eight to ten weeks before travel, then use the remaining weeks to arrange the CFIA paperwork. The CFIA certificate is typically issued within 10 days of travel, so there is no conflict if you plan the sequence correctly.

CFIA-accredited vets are listed on the CFIA website (inspection.canada.ca). Your vet will issue the health certificate after examining your pet; the CFIA regional office in your province then endorses it. Allow a few days for the endorsement step.

There is no direct service between Canada and Armenia. The standard routing for cargo is Toronto YYZ to Istanbul IST, then IST to Yerevan EVN on Turkish Airlines. The transatlantic leg (YYZ-IST) is a long-haul flight of approximately 10-11 hours, with the IST-EVN connection adding another 2.5 hours.

Turkish Airlines Cargo is the most practical carrier on this corridor. The airline has established live animal cargo procedures and its Istanbul hub has transfer facilities for animals in transit. Confirm live animal acceptance on both legs before finalising your booking, particularly in summer when temperature restrictions may apply.

Lufthansa via Frankfurt or Air France via Paris are alternatives for the transatlantic leg. Both FRA and CDG have good cargo facilities and animal lounges. The onward routing from Frankfurt or Paris to EVN typically uses Turkish Airlines or partner carrier connections through IST.

Yerevan’s Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) handles all international cargo arrivals, including live animals. The SSFS inspection team is present at EVN to check incoming pets against their documentation.

For a well-documented arrival from Canada, the process is a routine check of the import permit, health certificate, microchip scan, and vaccination records. There is no routine quarantine. Once the SSFS inspector is satisfied, your pet is released and you can proceed.
