Checklist

What your pet needs

Every item below must be completed and verified before your pet can travel. Expand each category for the detail.

Microchip
15-digit ISO 11784/11785 microchip required, implanted before the rabies vaccination and matching every document presented on arrival.
Rabies vaccination
Current rabies vaccination required, given between 30 days and 12 months before entry. Puppies and kittens under three months old cannot be vaccinated and are not permitted entry.
Rabies titre test
Not required to enter Algeria. Algeria doesn't ask for a rabies antibody titre test from a pet arriving from Canada, or from most other countries of origin. A titre test only becomes relevant later, if the pet is ever brought back to a country whose own rules classify Algeria differently, an entirely separate question from entry into Algeria itself.
Quarantine
No mandatory quarantine for a pet arriving with complete, compliant documentation. Non-compliant pets can face quarantine where facilities exist, forced return, or in the worst case euthanasia, all at the importer's expense.
Import permit
No standalone import permit is required for a pet dog or cat travelling with its owner.
Health certificate
The Canadian-issued certificate, in French or Arabic or with a certified translation attached, examined against the microchip and vaccination record on arrival. Algeria expects the underlying document to be no older than 14 days from a licensed vet's examination.
Export permit
No CFIA export permit required for a personal pet leaving Canada. Algeria's own import conditions, not a Canadian export licence, are what actually control entry.
Health certificate
Official health certificate issued by an accredited vet, built to Algeria's stated import conditions, including the deworming record below. CFIA endorsement is available through the regional office network where a destination calls for it.

Critical points

Algeria's own Australia page on this site describes 180 consecutive days staged in an approved country before DAFF will even process an import. Nothing equivalent touches this route. CFIA has no residency requirement of that kind, and Algeria asks for the same vaccination-and-certificate process it applies to most origins.

The pre-export deworming step is easy to miss precisely because so few other destinations on this site ask for it. Build it into the same vet visit that produces the health certificate, rather than treating it as a separate errand.

Algeria's breed position is inconsistent across sources: some describe Pit Bull-types and Staffordshire Bull Terriers as liable to be refused entry, others don't mention a restriction at all. Confirm the current position with DSV or the Algerian consulate directly if this could affect your dog.

No airline flies Toronto or Montreal to Algiers directly. Every booking connects through Istanbul or Paris, adding a leg and a second document check to plan around.

The rules for bringing a pet into Algeria

Algeria has a clear set of import requirements that are manageable with some planning. Follow them in order and keep an eye on the dates that cannot move.

How to keep this move on track

If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.

Get your pet used to the travel crate weeks in advance. A calm, crate-familiar animal travels far better than one meeting the crate for the first time at the airport.

Confirm live animal acceptance on every flight segment before booking. Not all aircraft or connections take pets, and cargo terms can differ leg to leg.

Keep every original document together and take copies. Border officials want originals, and a missing signature or date can hold up clearance.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Algeria does not require a titre test from a pet arriving from Canada, only a current rabies vaccination given between 30 days and 12 months before entry.
No. That 180-day staging requirement is specific to Australia’s DAFF framework, which grades countries into approved groups. CFIA has no equivalent system, and Algeria applies its standard vaccination-and-certificate process to a Canadian pet with no residency step in between.
Yes. Algeria’s own import guidance states that animals must be dewormed before export, a requirement most other countries on this site don’t ask for. Have this done and recorded at the same vet visit that produces the health certificate.
No. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul and Air France via Paris, the latter connecting with Air France’s or Air Canada’s own transatlantic Montreal-Paris service, are the two established routings.
Possibly not. Sources differ, with some describing Pit Bull-types and Staffordshire Bull Terriers as liable to be refused entry to Algeria and others silent on the point. Algeria publishes no single definitive banned-breed list, so confirm directly with DSV or the Algerian consulate before booking if this could apply to your dog.
