Overview

If you are relocating a pet from Belize to Australia, the process is manageable once you know the sequence. This route sits at the strict end, and about 40-53 weeks of preparation is realistic. Plan for 10 days of quarantine on arrival.

Use the timeline below to plan backwards from your travel date.

Step by step

The Belize to Australia process

1
Start of planning.
Confirm Belize's Non-Approved status hasn't changed, then choose a staging country, most practically the US given the direct BZE-LAX and BZE-MIA flights.

Responsible: You, checking DAFF/BICON directly

2
8-12 weeks, run before the residency clock starts.
If staging via the US, complete the full Belize-to-US CDC and screwworm certificate process first, since Belize is currently CDC high-risk and screwworm-affected.

Responsible: Your Belize vet, BAHA and a CDC-approved lab

3
As early as possible.
Relocate the pet to the staging country and register with a local vet there. This starts the 180-day clock.

Responsible: You

4
Within the residency period.
Two rabies vaccinations, at least 30 days apart, administered in the staging country, followed by the RNATT titre test at least 30 days after the second dose.

Responsible: Vet in the staging country

5
Fixed. Overlaps with steps 3 and 4 if timed well.
180 consecutive days' residency completed, running from the day residency began.

Responsible: Owner

6
8-12 weeks before travel, once residency and titre requirements are on track.
Book the Mickleham quarantine slot, apply for the BICON import permit, and arrange the Qantas leg into Melbourne.

Responsible: You or your agent

Checklist

Australia: entry requirements

RequirementDetail
MicrochipISO 11784/11785 microchip required.
Rabies vaccinationTwo rabies vaccinations required, at least 30 days apart, administered once the pet has begun its residency in a DAFF-approved country. A Belize-administered vaccination doesn't count toward this.
Rabies titre testA rabies neutralising antibody titre test (RNATT), drawn at least 30 days after the second vaccination, with a passing result. This can only happen once the pet is established in an approved country, since Belize itself has no route to a test that counts toward an Australian import.
QuarantineMandatory. Minimum 10 days at the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility near Melbourne, weekday arrivals only. Cost, typically AUD 2,000-4,000, is the owner's responsibility. Source: DAFF, checked 16 July 2026.
Import permitBecause Belize is Non-Approved, DAFF will not process an application filed directly from Belize. The pet must first complete 180 consecutive days of residency in an approved country, most practically the United States given American Airlines' direct Belize City service, before a BICON import permit application can be lodged from that country of residency. Source: DAFF, checked 16 July 2026.
Health certificateGovernment-endorsed veterinary health certificate from the country of residency at the time of export to Australia, valid 5 days from issue. A Belize-issued certificate has no standing in this process.

Export requirements

RequirementDetail
Export permitNo single-pet export permit process is published on BAHA's own site. Contact BAHA's Animal Health Department at Central Farm, Cayo District directly and confirm what they issue for a pet leaving Belize, well before booking the first leg of this move.
Health certificateVeterinary health certificate from a Belize-licensed vet. Since this route runs through a staging country rather than straight to Australia, the certificate that actually matters for DAFF is the one issued later, by a vet in the country of residency, not this initial Belize document.
Costs

What this route typically costs

1BAHA export documentation and vet consultations for the initial Belize departure: USD 60-150
2Belize-to-US CDC compliance costs, if staging via the US, including the screwworm certificate: USD 900-2,000, covered in full on the Belize to United States route page
3Living costs and vet fees in the staging country during the 180-day period: highly variable, a real budget item rather than a fixed transport cost
4RNATT titre test and BICON import permit (AUD 420): AUD 550-750 combined
5Mickleham quarantine, minimum 10 days: AUD 2,000-4,000
6IATA-compliant travel crate: AUD 150-450
7Final flight leg into Melbourne: AUD 1,800-4,000 depending on origin and crate size
8Typical all-in total, excluding the cost of establishing residency elsewhere: AUD 6,500-11,500
Critical points

Read before you book

⚠ Belize is Non-Approved on DAFF's own classification, the same bucket as every other Central American country. There is no direct Belize-to-Australia pet import, whatever a quote that skips the 180-day residency step might suggest.
⚠ If the US is the staging country, and it usually is given the direct BZE-LAX and BZE-MIA flights, the pet has to clear the full CDC high-risk and screwworm certificate process for Belize first. That process alone runs 9 to 12 weeks before the 180-day Australian clock can even start.
⚠ Mickleham is the only quarantine facility in Australia and it serves the entire country. Whatever Australian city you're actually settling in, your pet lands in Melbourne first, on a weekday only.
Carriers

Airlines on this route

American Airlines
Flies Belize City direct to Los Angeles or Miami, either a workable first leg into a Group 3 staging country such as the United States. Whichever gateway you choose only ever gets the pet as far as the start of a much longer residency process.
Cabin and Cargo
Qantas
Handles the final sector, from the country of residency, commonly the US west coast if Los Angeles was the entry point, into Melbourne. Confirm the Mickleham quarantine booking well ahead, since slots fill months in advance.
Cargo Only

How Australia handles incoming pets

Australia takes biosecurity seriously, and the requirements reflect that. The paperwork is exacting, so accuracy matters as much as timing.

What experienced owners do

Get your pet used to the travel crate weeks in advance. A calm, crate-familiar animal travels far better than one meeting the crate for the first time at the airport.

Confirm live animal acceptance on every flight segment before booking. Not all aircraft or connections take pets, and cargo terms can differ leg to leg.

Keep every original document together and take copies. Border officials want originals, and a missing signature or date can hold up clearance.

Work backwards from your travel date and add a buffer. Fixed waiting periods mean a single slipped appointment can push the whole move back by weeks.

FAQ

Common questions

No. Belize is a DAFF Non-Approved country, so direct export to Australia isn’t permitted under any circumstances. The pet must complete at least 180 consecutive days of residency in a DAFF-approved country first. Source: DAFF, checked 16 July 2026.
Because Belize is currently both CDC high-risk for dog rabies and a New World Screwworm affected country, since December 2024. If the US is the staging country, which is the practical choice given the direct Belize City to Los Angeles and Miami flights, the pet has to clear that entire CDC and screwworm process before the 180-day Australian residency clock even starts.
Yes, without exception. Every pet entering Australia completes a minimum 10 days at the Mickleham Post Entry Quarantine Facility near Melbourne, at the owner’s cost, typically AUD 2,000 to 4,000, regardless of which approved country the pet stages through immediately before Australia.
It can be, since Singapore is a DAFF Group 2 country and skips the RNATT titre test the Australia leg otherwise requires. It comes with a far less direct flight out of Belize City than the American Airlines routes into Los Angeles or Miami, so the time saved on the titre test has to be weighed against a harder first leg.
