Critical points
Bahrain is on the CDC's high-risk countries list for dog rabies. The full high-risk pathway applies to all dogs, regardless of vaccination history.
Dogs must be at least 6 months old on arrival in the US.
The CDC Dog Import Form is mandatory. Arrive without it and your dog may be refused entry.
Cats have no federal CDC requirements from Bahrain. No titre test, no CDC form needed for cats.
Arrive at a CDC-approved US Port of Entry. Not every major US airport is approved; check the current list.
The CDC High-Risk Pathway: What It Means in Practice
The US CDC classifies countries by whether they have active dog-mediated rabies. Countries on the high-risk list require dogs to complete a specific import pathway before entering the US. Bahrain is on this list.
Under the high-risk pathway, your dog needs: an ISO-compatible microchip; a valid rabies vaccination; a FAVN titre test at a CDC-approved laboratory with a result of at least 0.5 IU/ml (blood drawn no less than 30 days after the most recent vaccination); confirmation that the dog is at least 6 months old; and a completed CDC Dog Import Form submitted at cdc.gov/importation before travel. The CDC Dog Import Form is free to complete online and generates a unique confirmation code you present at the port of entry.
One thing worth clarifying: the CDC Dog Import Form is not the same as a health certificate issued by a veterinarian. Many owners confuse the two. The CDC form is completed by the owner online and captures the dog’s compliance details. A veterinary health certificate is issued by the vet and is typically required by airlines for cargo acceptance, but it is a separate document.
The titre test is the step that adds the most time. After vaccination and the 30-day wait for blood draw, laboratory results typically take two to four weeks. You will then need to arrange the cargo booking, prepare the CDC form, and organise travel. Realistically, four months is a prudent planning window from vaccination to US arrival.
Cats from Bahrain to the US: Straightforward by Comparison
If you are moving a cat rather than (or as well as) a dog, the regulatory picture is dramatically simpler. There are no federal CDC requirements for cats entering the US from any country. Cats from Bahrain do not need a titre test, a CDC form, or a USDA health certificate from the federal government’s perspective.
That said, the airline will have its own requirements. Most carriers transporting live animals internationally require a veterinary health certificate issued within a set number of days before travel (often seven to ten days). You will need to confirm the specific requirements with your chosen carrier when booking cargo space.
US states also vary in their pet entry requirements. Hawaii, for example, has its own strict quarantine system that applies to all incoming pets including cats, regardless of species or origin. If Bahrain to Hawaii is your route, research Hawaii’s requirements separately as they are significantly different from mainland US rules.
For cats heading to continental US states from Bahrain, the main documentation to prepare is an airline health certificate from your Bahrain vet, issued close to travel. Beyond that, cats enter the US without federal inspection formalities.
Booking the Flight and Arriving at a CDC-Approved Port
Dogs from Bahrain must arrive at a CDC-approved US Port of Entry. The CDC publishes and updates the approved port list at cdc.gov/importation. Major international airports including JFK (New York), LAX (Los Angeles), Chicago O’Hare, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson, and Miami International are typically on the list. Verify at the time of booking, because the list does change.
Gulf Air operates services from Bahrain International Airport (BAH). Connections through other Gulf hubs or European airports are also possible. All pets travel as cargo; neither Gulf Air nor most US carriers accept pets in the passenger cabin on long-haul routes. Book your cargo slot at least four to six weeks before travel, provide the crate dimensions, and confirm the airline’s live animal acceptance conditions for your specific aircraft type.
At the US port of entry, a CBP officer will scan the microchip, review the titre test documentation, verify the CDC form details, and confirm the dog’s age. The whole process is usually brief if documents are in order. If there are discrepancies, inspectors can detain the dog pending verification, which causes delays and stress for everyone.
