Critical points
Bahrain is not on the UK's listed countries list. The 90-day wait after a successful titre test is mandatory with no exceptions.
The 90-day wait runs from the date on the titre test result, not from when the blood was drawn.
London Heathrow is the only approved UK port of entry for pets arriving by air from non-listed countries. Do not route via another UK airport.
Gulf Air has seasonal restrictions on brachycephalic breeds. If your pet is flat-faced, check cargo conditions before booking.
Starting the Clock: Microchip, Vaccination, and the Titre Test
The UK’s pet import rules are built around a simple principle: the UK needs proof that your pet is genuinely protected against rabies. For pets from listed countries (the EU, US, Australia, and others), a current vaccination is enough. For pets from Bahrain, which sits outside the listed country framework, the UK requires blood test evidence.
That blood test is the FAVN (Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralisation) test. An APHA-approved laboratory measures the level of rabies-neutralising antibodies in your pet’s blood. The minimum passing level is 0.5 IU/ml. Before the blood can be drawn, your pet needs a valid microchip (ISO 11784/11785 standard) and a current rabies vaccination, with the blood draw happening at least 30 days after the most recent vaccination.
Once the result comes back passing, a 90-day countdown begins. That 90-day wait is written into UK law. There is no appeal, no waiver, and no shortcut. The earliest your pet can travel to the UK is 90 days after the date printed on the titre test result.
This is why families moving from Bahrain to the UK typically start the process four to five months before they plan to travel, and work with us to manage the logistics during the waiting period. If you are relocating for work, speak to your HR team early; some employers will adjust start dates by a few weeks to accommodate the pet process.
Arriving in Britain: The Heathrow Route
Pets arriving by air from Bahrain must enter the UK through London Heathrow, the only approved port of entry for pets from non-listed countries arriving by air. Gulf Air operates direct flights from Bahrain International Airport (BAH) to Heathrow (LHR), which makes routing straightforward. British Airways also operates the route via its cargo network.
All pets travel as cargo on this route. Neither Gulf Air nor British Airways accepts pets in the passenger cabin on long-haul international flights. You will need to arrange a cargo booking separately from your own ticket, usually four to eight weeks before travel, and provide the dimensions and weight of the IATA-compliant crate. The kennel must be large enough for your pet to stand, turn around, and lie down without restriction.
At Heathrow, APHA (Animal and Plant Health Agency) staff at the Animal Reception Centre check all documentation before the pet is released. They scan the microchip, verify the vaccination record, check the titre test result date against the 90-day requirement, and inspect the health certificate. The inspection fee is approximately GBP 285 per consignment. If everything is in order, most inspections take one to two hours.
One detail that occasionally causes problems: the titre test result date and the travel date must be at least 90 days apart, and that difference must be clearly visible in the paperwork. If the dates are ambiguous or the certificate wording is unclear, the ARC staff may flag it for further review.
Additional Vaccinations for Dogs: DHLP
While the UK does not require additional vaccinations for incoming pets beyond rabies for the titre test process, Bahrain’s outbound requirements include DHLP vaccination for dogs and Tri-cat (FVRCP) for cats as part of the Animal Wealth Directorate’s export clearance process. Make sure these are current before obtaining the health certificate from Bahrain’s competent authority.
The Bahrain health certificate is issued by an authorised veterinarian and endorsed by the Animal Wealth Directorate. It must accompany your pet and be presented at Heathrow. The certificate has a limited validity period, so time the issuance carefully to fall within the accepted window for UK import.
If your dog is a breed covered by the UK’s Dangerous Dogs Act (Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro), it cannot be imported into the UK regardless of documentation. Check this before starting the process.
For brachycephalic (snub-nosed) breeds such as Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Persian cats, cargo restrictions apply on most international routes. Gulf Air imposes seasonal temperature-based restrictions and may refuse flat-faced animals during peak summer months. Confirm cargo eligibility with the airline before making any bookings.
