Pet Transport from Azerbaijan to Spain
Azerbaijan is not on the EU's approved third-country list. The full unlisted-country import process applies: microchip, rabies vaccination, titre test, and a 3-month wait from the blood draw date. Start preparations 5 to 6 months before your intended move …
The Azerbaijan to Spain import process
Every step must be completed in sequence. A single missed deadline can add months to your timeline. We own the entire process.

Every item must be verified before your pet can board. We track each one against current standards.
What this route typically costs
Critical points
The 3-month wait is counted from the blood draw date, not the result date. Miscalculating this causes the move to fail at the Spanish border.
Confirm that the EU-approved laboratory you use accepts samples from Azerbaijan and can arrange courier shipping of the blood sample.
PPP-listed breeds require civil liability insurance of at least EUR 120,000 before arriving in Spain. This must be arranged before travel.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
How long does the titre test and wait add to the timeline?
The titre test is the step that sets the whole schedule. Your pet needs a microchip first, then a rabies vaccination (minimum age 12 weeks), then a 30-day wait before the blood draw. The FAVN or RNATT blood sample must go to an EU-approved laboratory and return a result of 0.5 IU/ml or above.
From the blood draw date, the 3-month waiting period begins. Not from the result date. Not from the vaccination date. Border inspectors at Madrid or Barcelona will check the blood draw date against the entry date, so this date needs to be accurate and consistent across all documents.
If the titre test falls below 0.5 IU/ml, the process restarts: a booster vaccination, another 30-day wait, a new blood draw, and a fresh 3-month clock. Book your laboratory appointment only when your pet is confirmed healthy.
What does the Azerbaijan health certificate process involve?
After the 3-month wait, your authorised vet in Azerbaijan produces an official health certificate recording the microchip number, vaccination dates, titre test laboratory, result, and blood draw date. The State Veterinary Service (Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan) endorses this certificate before departure.
Health certificates have a short validity window, so timing the appointment close to your travel date is important. Confirm the exact validity requirement with MAPA (Spain’s authority) before booking the vet appointment.
Spain’s border inspection post at Madrid Barajas or Barcelona El Prat checks every detail on arrival. Any inconsistency between the microchip number on the animal and on the certificate, or between the blood draw date and the entry date, can result in detention.
Which airlines fly pets from Baku to Spain?
Turkish Airlines via Istanbul (GYD-IST-MAD or GYD-IST-BCN) is the most consistent option. AZAL, Azerbaijan’s national carrier, connects Baku to some European hubs; confirm current cargo pet acceptance directly with AZAL Cargo before planning. Qatar Airways via Doha to Madrid is another option, though summer temperature embargoes at Doha reduce availability between June and September.
Total costs typically run from EUR 1,100 to EUR 3,100. Airline cargo fees account for the largest portion. An IPATA-registered agent can manage the certificate, airline booking, and inspection paperwork for EUR 400 to EUR 800 if you would rather not handle the process yourself.
