Critical points to read before you book

Apply for the MAAIF import permit 8-10 weeks before travel at maaif.go.ug. This is the prerequisite for Uganda entry. Do not book cargo until it is confirmed.

Austria requires an Amtstierarzt (official district vet) for export health certificates. Contact your Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde to arrange this appointment within 10 days of travel.

The Austrian EU pet passport is for intra-EU travel only. An Amtstierarzt-issued and endorsed official export health certificate is required for Uganda.

MAAIF officers at Entebbe inspect both the permit and the health certificate. Both must be present and valid on arrival.

Carriers approved for this route

Not all airlines accept live animals on this route. We know which carriers to use and how to book.

Cargo Only
Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa
VIE to Addis Ababa (ADD) via connections, then Ethiopian Cargo ADD-EBB. Ethiopian has the most extensive live animal programme in Africa. ADD-EBB is a short East African regional hop.
Cargo Only
Kenya Airways via Nairobi
Routing from VIE via European or Gulf hub to Nairobi (NBO), then Kenya Airways NBO-EBB. A short regional hop from Nairobi to Entebbe. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance on all legs.
Cargo Only

Routing from Vienna to Entebbe

Vienna International Airport (VIE) has no direct service to Entebbe. The two most practical routings are via Brussels and via Addis Ababa.

Via Brussels: Austrian Airlines connects VIE to Brussels Zaventem (BRU), where Brussels Airlines operates BRU-EBB as part of its East Africa network. This is a two-leg journey via a single European hub. Confirm live animal acceptance with Brussels Airlines Cargo for the BRU-EBB service.

Via Addis Ababa: Ethiopian Airlines connects from VIE (or via FRA on Austrian Airlines/Lufthansa) to ADD, then Ethiopian Cargo runs ADD-EBB. Ethiopian has the most comprehensive live animal programme in Africa and ADD-EBB is a regular short connection. Kenya Airways via Nairobi (NBO-EBB) is a third option, with NBO accessible from Gulf or European hubs.

Austria's Amtstierarzt export health certificate

Austria’s official export health certificates for non-EU destinations are issued by an Amtstierarzt (official district veterinarian) at your local Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde. A certificate from a private vet is not the correct document for Uganda.

Contact your Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde well before travel to identify the Amtstierarzt in your district and arrange an appointment. The appointment must occur within 10 days of your travel date. The Amtstierarzt verifies the ISO microchip, vaccination records, and health condition before issuing the export certificate. The certificate is then endorsed by the relevant federal or provincial authority.

Your regular private vet handles vaccinations, microchipping, and routine checks, but the export health certificate itself must come from the Amtstierarzt.

MAAIF: Uganda's import permit authority

Uganda’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) at maaif.go.ug processes companion animal imports. The MAAIF permit is the document that authorises entry; without it, MAAIF officers at Entebbe cannot clear your animal.

Apply with your pet’s microchip number, species, breed, vaccination history, and intended travel date. Eight to ten weeks of lead time is recommended. Follow up after submitting to confirm the application is in progress. On arrival at Entebbe International Airport (EBB), MAAIF inspects the permit alongside the Austrian health certificate. No quarantine applies for pets with a valid permit and compliant documentation.
