Pet Transport from Austria to Switzerland
Which Switzerland rules depend on a pet coming from Austria?
Switzerland sorts countries into 3 groups, and Austria falls in “Category 1”.
EU Member States and other European states and territories using approved pet passports; free of urban rabies. Microchip, valid rabies vaccination and recognised pet passport. Official source
These rules apply to that group, on top of the rules every pet follows:
- Rabies titre test: Not required for Category 1 or 2 origins: the FSVO lists the titre test only under additional requirements for rabies risk countries. Animals from Category 1 or 2 transiting a Category 3 country by secure transport or airport (owner declaration) also need no titre (EDAV-Ht Art. 15 para. 4). Applies to dogs and cats from Category 1 and 2 countries.
Travelling with dogs, cats and ferrets, checked 1 October 2026 - Minimum age: From low rabies risk (Category 2) countries, young animals that have not completed vaccination can enter with a special owner declaration. From the EU, young animals up to 16 weeks that could not complete vaccination need the EU owner declaration. Applies to young dogs and cats from Category 1 and 2 countries.

The rules that apply to every pet entering Switzerland, whatever the origin, are listed with their official sources in our Switzerland guide.
What does Austria require before your pet leaves?
- Export permit: Not required: Austria prescribes no separate conditions (such as export quarantine) for leaving with pets. Applies to dogs and cats leaving Austria.
Reiseverkehr: Einreise und Wiedereinreise von Hunden, Katzen, Frettchen und anderen Heimtieren, checked 1 October 2026 - Export health certificate: Before taking a pet abroad, owners should ask the official veterinarian (Amtstierarzt) at the district authority or municipal office about the destination's rules (Ministry of Finance customs page). See the Vienna entry for who issues official health certificates. Applies to dogs and cats leaving Austria.
Reisen mit Tieren, checked 1 October 2026 - Export health certificate: Vienna example: the official veterinary health certificate usually has to be issued within 10 days before travel, by online appointment only; book early in holiday season. Applies to dogs and cats leaving from Vienna.
Reisen mit Tieren, checked 1 October 2026 - Export health certificate: Vaccinations, parasite treatments and titre tests must be done by private vets before the official certificate is issued; bring the destination's own forms, filled in, to the appointment. Applies to dogs and cats leaving from Vienna.
Reisen mit Tieren, checked 1 October 2026 - Other conditions: On the Austrian side there are no border veterinary requirements for leaving Austria (animal welfare law still applies). Applies to dogs and cats leaving Austria.
Einfuhr/Import FAQ, checked 1 October 2026 - Other conditions: For re-entry from most third countries a rabies titre test is needed; the BAVG advises doing it before departure, as a low titre could otherwise prevent the pet returning to Austria. Applies to Austrian pets travelling to third countries and returning.
