What this route typically costs
Critical points to read before you book
Apply for the RAB import permit 8-10 weeks before travel at rab.gov.rw. Do not finalise cargo bookings until the permit is confirmed.
Austria's health certificate process requires an Amtstierarzt (official district vet). Contact your Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde in advance to arrange the appointment within the 10-day travel window.
The Austrian EU pet passport is for intra-EU travel only. An Amtstierarzt-issued and endorsed official export health certificate is required for Rwanda.
There is no direct flight from Vienna to Kigali. Allow for a connecting hub (Brussels or Addis Ababa) when planning travel times.

Routing from Vienna to Kigali
Vienna International Airport (VIE) has strong European connections but no direct service to Kigali. Two practical routings present themselves for Austria-to-Rwanda pet cargo.
The first is via Brussels (BRU): Austrian Airlines connects VIE to BRU, where Brussels Airlines operates its direct BRU-KGL East Africa service. This gives a two-leg journey with a single transfer at a major European hub. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance with Brussels Airlines Cargo for the BRU-KGL leg.
The second is via Addis Ababa (ADD): Ethiopian Airlines connects from VIE (or via FRA on Austrian Airlines/Lufthansa) to ADD, then Ethiopian Cargo runs the ADD-KGL connection. Ethiopian has the most extensive live animal cargo programme in Africa and ADD-KGL is a short East African hop. Both routings are viable; discuss with a pet transport agent which suits your travel dates.
Austria's Amtstierarzt health certificate
Austria’s export health certificates for non-EU destinations are issued by an Amtstierarzt (official district veterinarian) employed by your local Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde (district authority). This is not a private vet: the Amtstierarzt holds the authority to issue official export certificates.
Contact your Bezirksverwaltungsbehörde to identify the Amtstierarzt in your district and book an appointment. The appointment must fall within 10 days of your travel date. The Amtstierarzt verifies the ISO microchip, checks vaccination records, and issues the health certificate. The certificate is then endorsed by the relevant federal or provincial authority.
Allow time for the endorsement step after the Amtstierarzt appointment. Your private vet can handle vaccinations and microchipping, but the export health certificate must come from the Amtstierarzt.
RAB import permit for Rwanda
Rwanda’s Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board (RAB) at rab.gov.rw processes companion animal import permits. Apply at least 8-10 weeks before travel with your pet’s ISO microchip number, species, breed, vaccination history, and travel date.
Rwanda’s permit process is generally predictable. Apply early and follow up after submission. On arrival at Kigali International Airport (KGL), RAB officers inspect the permit alongside the Amtstierarzt health certificate. No quarantine applies for pets arriving with a valid permit and compliant documentation.
