What this route typically costs
Critical points
Tapeworm treatment for dogs has a strict 24 to 120 hour window before arrival in Great Britain. Too early or too late means non-compliant documentation and potential penalty quarantine.
Finding an Official Veterinarian (OV) in Australia who is familiar with the DEFRA AHC format for Great Britain takes time. Ordinary vets cannot issue this certificate. Search APHA's contacts for Australia-based OVs or use a specialist agent.
The AHC must be issued within 10 days of travel. An examination on day 11 or earlier is non-compliant.
Microchip must pre-date the rabies vaccination. Australian vets generally sequence this correctly but always verify before starting the AHC process.
Great Britain bans Pit Bull Terrier types, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino and Fila Brasileiro. These breeds cannot be imported.
Approved carriers for this route
Not all airlines accept live animals. We book only with carriers that handle live animal cargo correctly.
Why Australia to UK is simpler than UK to Australia
The UK-to-Australia route requires a titre test, a 180-day waiting period, and a 10-day quarantine in Melbourne. The Australia-to-UK route requires none of these. The UK classifies Australia as a listed (approved) country, which means animals from Australia can enter Great Britain with standard documentation and no mandatory quarantine.
The difference is driven by Britain’s rabies-free status and its tiered approved-country list. Australia, also rabies-free and with rigorous biosecurity standards, is trusted as an approved origin. Provided your microchip, vaccination and AHC are in order, your pet walks off the cargo terminal with you after a short inspection at Heathrow.
Finding an Official Veterinarian in Australia
The Animal Health Certificate must be issued by an Official Veterinarian, not just any registered vet. An OV is a vet who has been accredited to issue government health certificates for international travel. Not all Australian vets hold this accreditation.
APHA (the UK authority) publishes guidance on finding OVs for non-EU countries. Specialist pet relocation agents in Australia typically have established relationships with OVs and can coordinate the examination and certificate on your behalf. If you are arranging this independently, allow extra time to locate an accredited OV and book the appointment within the 10-day window before travel.
Planning the tapeworm treatment
Dogs entering Great Britain from any country require tapeworm (echinococcus) treatment within 24 to 120 hours of scheduled arrival. This applies regardless of origin country.
From Sydney or Melbourne, a direct Qantas flight to Heathrow takes approximately 22-24 hours. A connecting flight via Singapore or Dubai takes 28-36 hours. Work backwards from your scheduled UK arrival time to determine when the tapeworm treatment must be given.
For a direct Sydney to Heathrow flight arriving Wednesday at 06:00, the treatment must have been given between the previous Saturday at 06:00 and Tuesday at 06:00. Most vets in Australia schedule the treatment 2-3 days before the flight, which fits comfortably in the window for direct routes.
Have your vet record the treatment time precisely in the AHC. The APHA inspector at Heathrow will check the time as well as the date.
