Step by step

The Australia to Bahamas import process

Every step must be completed in sequence. A single missed deadline can add months to your timeline. We own the entire process.

1
Start of planning.
Confirm the microchip is fitted and gather proof of the pet's continuous Australian residency (or its since-birth history if under 6 months old).

Responsible: Owner, with Australian vet

2
Well ahead of the certificate appointment.
Bring core vaccinations (distemper, hepatitis, leptospirosis, parvovirus, adenovirus for dogs; the full feline panel for cats) up to date. No rabies vaccine is needed for this route.

Responsible: Australian vet

3
As early as possible; account activation and approval can take several weeks combined.
Register for a Click2Clear account by emailing BAHFSA, then apply for the ePermit.

Responsible: Owner or agent

4
Close to the certificate date.
Arrange the negative internal parasite test (modified McMaster technique).

Responsible: Australian vet

5
Within 48 hours of departure.
International veterinary health certificate issued, confirming residency, vaccinations and the parasite result.

Responsible: Australian vet

6
6-8 weeks before travel.
Book cargo space: Qantas to Los Angeles then American Airlines via Miami, or Qantas/British Airways via Perth and London to Nassau direct.

Responsible: Owner or cargo agent

7
At the point of entry.
ePermit and health certificate presented on arrival in Nassau.

Responsible: Owner

Critical points

This is one of the few routes on this site where an Australian pet skips the rabies vaccine altogether. Do not let a vet or agent unfamiliar with the WOAH rabies-free rule book in an unnecessary vaccination; it isn't what BAHFSA's own conditions ask for.

The residency requirement is genuine: the certificate has to state the pet has been continuously in Australia for the 6 months before travel, or since birth. A pet that has recently moved to Australia from elsewhere may not qualify for this pathway and should confirm its status with BAHFSA before assuming the rabies-free route applies.

BAHFSA bans several breeds outright regardless of origin, including Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Cane Corso, American Bully, Staffordshire Terrier and Dogo Argentino types for dogs, and Savannah, Bengal and Chausie for cats. Check this before booking anything else.

There is no single-carrier itinerary from Australia to Nassau. Every routing involves at least one change of airline, so book the whole journey as one coordinated cargo movement rather than two separate tickets.

The rules for bringing a pet into Bahamas

Bahamas has a clear set of import requirements that are manageable with some planning. Follow them in order and keep an eye on the dates that cannot move.

How to keep this move on track

Ask about temperature embargoes for your travel window. Summer and winter cargo restrictions can rule out certain routes and dates entirely.

Microchip before you vaccinate. The microchip must be in place before the rabies shot for the vaccination to count, and getting this order wrong is the most common and costly mistake.

Use an official, government-authorised vet for the health certificate, not just your usual clinic. Many destinations only accept certificates signed by an approved vet.

If this is your first international move, consider an IPATA-registered pet transport agent. They handle the documents, airline booking and crate sizing, and can troubleshoot problems.

FAQ

Common questions

No. BAHFSA treats Australia as a WOAH rabies-free country, so the rabies vaccine isn’t required at all for this route. Instead, the international veterinary certificate must confirm the pet has been continuously in Australia for the six months before travel, or since birth if younger.
No. The Bahamas doesn’t require a rabies antibody titre test from any country of origin, rabies-free or not.
The UK and the US are both WOAH non-rabies-free countries, so pets from those origins need a rabies vaccine given within a 10-month (one-year vaccine) or 34-month (three-year vaccine) window. Australia’s WOAH rabies-free status replaces that with a six-month residency certificate instead.
No. The most workable routings connect through Los Angeles and Miami on Qantas and American Airlines, or through Perth and London on Qantas and British Airways. Every option involves at least one change of carrier.
Yes, regardless of origin. BAHFSA excludes Pit Bull, Presa Canario, Cane Corso, American Bully, Staffordshire Terrier and Dogo Argentino type dogs, and Savannah, Bengal and Chausie cats.
