Overview
Poland is one of the larger EU markets for international pet arrivals, and Warsaw Chopin Airport handles live animal cargo regularly via its cargo terminal. The process from Armenia follows the standard EU unlisted third country route: FAVN titre test, 90-day wait, SSFS health certificate. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the main practical routing from Yerevan. The total preparation time is 22-28 weeks, and that timeline is driven by the mandatory waiting periods, not bureaucratic delay.
Step by step
The Armenia to Poland process
1
The chip precedes the vaccination. This is a legal requirement under EU rules. One appointment.
Microchip (ISO 11784/11785) - first, before vaccination
Responsible: Veterinarian in Armenia
2
After microchipping. Wait at least 30 days before the FAVN blood draw. Booster within a valid series: immediately effective, but the chip-before-vaccination rule always applies.
Rabies vaccination
Responsible: Veterinarian in Armenia
3
At least 30 days after the primary vaccination. Blood drawn in Yerevan, shipped cold to an EU-approved lab. Results take 2-4 weeks from sample arrival at the lab.
FAVN titre test blood draw and laboratory submission
Responsible: Armenian vet and EU-approved laboratory
4
Mandatory. Runs from the blood draw date. If results come back on day 15 after the draw, you still wait until day 90 from the draw.
90-day wait from the blood draw date
Responsible: N/A (waiting period)
5
During the 90-day wait. Turkish Airlines via IST is the main routing. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance for your dates.
Book cargo Yerevan to Warsaw
Responsible: Owner or IPATA-registered agent
6
Within 10 days of travel to Poland. The SSFS endorsement step adds time so book the appointment at least two weeks before travel.
SSFS-endorsed AHC from authorised vet in Yerevan
Responsible: SSFS-authorised vet in Armenia
7
Travel day. EVN-IST-WAW is approximately 6-8 hours total. GIW border check on arrival at WAW.

Critical points
Read before you book
⚠ Chip before vaccination, without exception. If the microchip is implanted after the rabies vaccination, the vaccination is considered invalid under EU rules and the whole process restarts.
⚠ The FAVN titre test result must meet 0.5 IU/ml. If it falls below this, the test fails, you must re-vaccinate and retest, and the 90-day wait starts again from the new successful blood draw date. Add a buffer to your timeline.
⚠ Poland does not have a nationwide breed ban list but individual cities and landlords may have restrictions. Confirm your breed's status in your destination city before travel.
⚠ Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) handles pet cargo through the cargo terminal, separate from the passenger terminal. Your agent coordinates the pet's arrival independently from your own check-in if you are flying simultaneously.
Carriers
Airlines on this route
Turkish Airlines
Yerevan (EVN) to Istanbul (IST), then IST to Warsaw Chopin (WAW) or Krakow (KRK). Turkish Airlines Cargo is the primary option for Caucasus-to-Poland pet cargo. IST-WAW connections operate several times weekly. Temperature embargoes apply in summer. Book through an approved cargo agent and confirm live animal acceptance.
Cargo Only
LOT Polish Airlines
LOT operates from Warsaw (WAW) and has code-share arrangements on some Caucasus routes. For live animal cargo from Yerevan, confirm current acceptance and routing with LOT Cargo directly. LOT Cargo at WAW is familiar with EU unlisted country import documentation.
Cargo Only
Lufthansa
Via Frankfurt (FRA) with connections to Warsaw or Krakow. Lufthansa Cargo at Frankfurt has excellent live animal facilities. The Caucasus leg routes via a partner carrier to FRA. A practical alternative if Turkish Airlines capacity is unavailable.
Cargo Only
Flydubai
Yerevan to Dubai (DXB), then Emirates SkyCargo to Warsaw. The DXB-WAW segment is possible via Emirates. Summer heat embargoes at Dubai (June to September) may affect scheduling. Longer total routing than IST.
Cargo Only
The three fixed waiting periods that determine your timeline
On the Armenia-to-Poland route, three waiting periods control when travel is possible. None of them can be shortened.
The first: after the rabies vaccination, you must wait at least 30 days before drawing blood for the FAVN titre test. This is the minimum immunological response window. Drawing blood earlier gives an inaccurate result and the test fails.
The second: after the blood draw, the sample goes to the EU-approved laboratory. Lab processing takes 2-4 weeks from receipt of sample. This is not a regulatory wait but a practical one. Factor it into your plans.
The third: once you have a passing titre test result (0.5 IU/ml or above), a mandatory 90-day wait starts from the blood draw date before your pet can enter Poland. Not from the results date. From the draw date. If results arrive on day 20 after the draw, you have 70 more days to wait.
Add the microchipping appointment (before vaccination) and the SSFS health certificate window (within 10 days of travel), and 22-28 weeks is a realistic total.
Getting the health certificate right for Poland
The SSFS health certificate is the document that covers your pet for the journey from Yerevan to Warsaw. It is issued by an SSFS-authorised vet in Armenia, endorsed by the SSFS, and is valid as an entry document for 10 days from the date of issue.
The certificate must be in the EU format for non-commercial pet movements from unlisted third countries. The format is specified in EU Regulation 2020/692. Your Armenian vet must use the current template, not an older format.
Book the vet appointment at least two weeks before your planned travel date. The SSFS endorsement step is not instant: the vet issues the certificate, submits it to the SSFS, and the SSFS endorses it. In Yerevan this process takes several working days. If you leave it until 3-4 days before travel, you risk the endorsement arriving after your scheduled departure.
FAQ
Common questions
No. Poland applies standard EU rules under Regulation 2020/692 for pets from unlisted third countries: microchip, rabies vaccination, FAVN titre test at 0.5 IU/ml or above, 90-day wait from blood draw, and an SSFS-endorsed AHC issued within 10 days. The GIW (Chief Veterinary Inspectorate) checks documentation on arrival at Warsaw Chopin. No Polish-specific additions.
Your pet travels as cargo, and the cargo terminal at WAW is separate from the passenger terminal. If you fly on the same day, your pet’s cargo booking and your passenger ticket are handled separately, but both arrive at Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW). Your IPATA agent coordinates the cargo paperwork and drop-off/collection schedule.
If the result is below 0.5 IU/ml, the test is classed as a failure. You must wait at least 30 days from the first blood draw before re-vaccinating or waiting for a booster, then draw blood again. The 90-day wait starts fresh from the date of the new successful blood draw. A failed test adds a minimum of 3-4 months to your timeline.
