The 90-day wait and why it cannot be shortened
Under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2026/131 (in force from 22 April 2026, replacing EU Regulation 576/2013), pets from unlisted countries must pass a rabies antibody titre test and wait 90 days from the blood draw date before entering the EU. This wait exists to ensure that the immune response shown in the blood test has had time to become established protection.
There is no expedited route. No Dutch authority, no EU official, and no pet transport agent can shorten the 90-day period. If your blood draw date is 1 January and the test passes, your earliest entry date is 1 April. Some owners draw blood as soon as possible when they know a move is coming, even if the travel date is not yet fixed, precisely to get the 90-day clock running.
Schiphol as the Dutch entry point and the NVWA inspection
Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is the Netherlands’ international cargo hub and the practical entry point for pets arriving from outside the EU. The NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) handles border inspection at Schiphol. For compliant arrivals, the inspection is a straightforward administrative check: the NVWA officer verifies the health certificate, titre test result, and microchip, and confirms the animal’s identity. Most compliant arrivals clear without delay.
From Yerevan, Turkish Airlines via Istanbul (IST) is the most common cargo routing to AMS. KLM connections from EVN via other European hubs are an alternative. Confirm with the carrier that live animal cargo is accepted on the specific booking before paying for any documentation.
