Overview
Budapest has become a well-connected Central European hub for expats arriving from the Middle East and Caucasus, but the pet move from Yerevan to Budapest is not simple. Armenia’s EU unlisted status means the FAVN titre test and 90-day wait apply, and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the main viable cargo routing. Hungary’s NÉBIH checks documentation on arrival at Budapest Ferenc Liszt. Allow 22-28 weeks from start to finish.
Step by step

The Armenia to Hungary process

1
Before any vaccination. This is a legal requirement under EU rules and the sequence is checked by NÉBIH on arrival.
Microchip (ISO 11784/11785) - must be first

Responsible: Veterinarian in Armenia

2
After microchipping. Wait 30 days before blood draw for the titre test.
Rabies vaccination

Responsible: Veterinarian in Armenia

3
Minimum 30 days after vaccination. Blood drawn in Yerevan and shipped to an EU-approved laboratory. Results: 2-4 weeks from sample arrival.
FAVN titre test blood draw

Responsible: Armenian vet and EU-approved laboratory

4
From the date of the blood draw, not the results date. The 90-day clock starts immediately after the sample is taken.
90-day wait from blood draw date

Responsible: N/A (waiting period)

5
During the 90-day wait. Turkish Airlines via IST is the practical routing. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance.
Book cargo Yerevan to Budapest

Responsible: Owner or agent

6
Within 10 days of travel to Budapest. Book the appointment at least 2 weeks before travel to allow time for SSFS endorsement.
SSFS-endorsed AHC from authorised Armenian vet

Responsible: SSFS-authorised vet in Armenia

7
Travel day. EVN-IST-BUD is approximately 5-7 hours total. NÉBIH border vet inspection on arrival at BUD.
Travel Yerevan to Budapest

Responsible: Airline cargo and owner

Critical points

Read before you book

⚠ NÉBIH (Hungary's food chain safety office) checks the titre test certificate, the AHC, and the vaccination record carefully. They look at the dates: microchip before vaccination, blood draw at least 30 days after vaccination, 90 days elapsed since blood draw. All three must hold.
⚠ Wizz Air does not accept live animal cargo. Owners sometimes attempt to book Wizz Air direct routes expecting cargo acceptance. This is not available. Use Turkish Airlines via Istanbul or Lufthansa via Frankfurt.
⚠ Hungarian Budapest airport cargo handling is separate from the passenger terminal. If you fly passenger on the same day your pet travels cargo, arrange the cargo collection and documentation through your agent.
⚠ Hungary has specific rules under the 1998 Animal Protection Act for certain dog breeds. American Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, and related types face restrictions. Confirm your breed's status with the local authority before travel.
Carriers

Airlines on this route

Turkish Airlines
Yerevan (EVN) to Istanbul (IST), then IST to Budapest Ferenc Liszt International (BUD). Turkish Airlines Cargo is the main practical option for this corridor. IST-BUD connections operate several times weekly. Temperature embargoes apply during summer months. Book through a cargo agent and confirm live animal acceptance for your specific dates.
Cargo Only
Wizz Air
Wizz Air operates on Yerevan-Budapest routes but does not accept live animal cargo in the hold. Not suitable for pet transport. Included here for reference as owners sometimes ask about Wizz Air on this route.
Cargo Only
Lufthansa
Via Frankfurt (FRA) with connections to Budapest. Lufthansa Cargo at FRA provides live animal transit with temperature-controlled holding. The Caucasus leg routes via a partner carrier to Frankfurt first. A reasonable alternative to the Turkish Airlines IST routing.
Cargo Only
Flydubai
Yerevan to Dubai (DXB), then Emirates SkyCargo to Budapest. The DXB-BUD segment via Emirates is possible but involves a longer total routing. Summer heat embargoes at Dubai affect scheduling June to September.

What NÉBIH checks when your pet arrives in Budapest

Hungary’s National Food Chain Safety Office (NÉBIH) carries out veterinary border checks on live animals arriving from third countries. For pets from EU unlisted countries like Armenia, they verify four things: the microchip is in place and matches the documentation; the rabies vaccination is current and was done after the microchip; the FAVN titre test result is 0.5 IU/ml or above; and the 90-day wait from the blood draw date has passed before the travel date shown on the AHC.

They also check that the AHC was issued within 10 days of the pet’s arrival in Hungary and that the SSFS endorsement is present and current.

If any of these dates do not add up, the pet is refused entry or placed in conditional quarantine at the owner’s expense. Getting the paperwork sequence right is not optional, it is the entry condition.

Why Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is the standard routing

No direct cargo flight operates between Yerevan and Budapest for live animals. The most practical routing is Turkish Airlines Cargo, which connects Yerevan Zvartnots (EVN) to Istanbul (IST) and then IST to Budapest Ferenc Liszt (BUD).

Turkish Airlines Cargo accepts live animals in IATA-compliant crates on both the EVN-IST and IST-BUD segments. Temperature restrictions apply during summer months, typically when temperatures at origin, transit, or destination are above 29-30 degrees Celsius. For summer moves, confirm cargo acceptance on specific dates before booking anything else.

Wizz Air also operates on the Yerevan-Budapest corridor but does not accept live animal cargo. Ryanair serves Budapest but similarly does not carry pets in the hold. For this route, Turkish Airlines or Lufthansa via Frankfurt are the practical options.

FAQ

Common questions

Allow 22-28 weeks from the first vet appointment in Yerevan to arrival in Budapest. The microchip, vaccination, and titre test sequence takes 5-8 weeks, then the 90-day wait adds 13 more. Add time for SSFS health certificate preparation and cargo booking. Do not plan around the minimum.
No routine quarantine applies for compliant pets. NÉBIH carries out a document check on arrival at Budapest airport. If the 90-day wait has passed, the titre test is above 0.5 IU/ml, and the AHC and vaccination records are in order, the pet is released. Conditional quarantine at the owner’s expense applies only if documentation is incomplete or the waiting period has not elapsed.
No. Wizz Air does not accept live animal cargo in the hold on any route. This applies to cats, dogs, and all other live animals. The only practical cargo option from Yerevan to Budapest is Turkish Airlines via Istanbul or a routing via Frankfurt with Lufthansa.
