Frequently Asked Questions

Bringing a pet to the Maldives for long-term residence is possible but highly restricted. The Maldives does not permit most imported pets to stay permanently due to island biosecurity rules. Expatriate workers in the Maldives who wish to keep a pet face significant regulatory hurdles. Contact the Ministry of Fisheries, Marine Resources and Agriculture (MOFMRA) for current import rules. Dogs are generally not permitted as imports except under very specific circumstances.

Maldivian operates domestic inter-island turboprop flights within the Maldives. The aircraft types used (ATR 42 and ATR 72) have limited baggage space. Live animal transport on domestic Maldivian flights is not a standard service. Contact Maldivian directly if you need to move an animal between atolls, as special arrangements may be possible on a case-by-case basis.

Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Singapore Airlines serve Male (MLE) and have live animal cargo programmes, though accepting live animals on the Male route depends on the specific aircraft and operational conditions. Most Maldives-bound pet shipments are arranged through specialist freight forwarders who coordinate with the MOFMRA and the relevant airline cargo teams.
