Import Permit: First Step

Apply to the Zimbabwe Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) for an import permit before travel.

Allow 4 to 6 weeks. The permit specifies the entry point – typically Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE).

Health Documentation Required

  1. Import permit (reference the permit number in the health certificate)
  2. Official health certificate – issued by an accredited vet in your country, endorsed by your national authority, issued within 14 days of travel
  3. Rabies vaccination – current
  4. Core vaccinations (as above for dogs/cats)
  5. Microchip (strongly recommended)
  6. Parasite treatment (internal and external)

DVS vets check documentation at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport and may inspect the animal. Keep originals accessible.

Rabies is present in Zimbabwe – keep vaccinations current throughout your stay. Tick-borne diseases are a significant risk; monthly tick prevention is essential. Harare has several competent private veterinary practices. The subtropical highland climate is generally comfortable for most breeds.
