Moving Pets from the USA to the UK: The Direct Route Guide

The USA to UK route is one of the most-travelled international pet moves in the world. Tens of thousands of American families relocate to Britain each year, many with dogs and cats. The process is well-defined and, relative to routes like USA-to-Australia, quite manageable.

What the UK Requires from USA Pets

Great Britain classifies the USA as a listed country, meaning:

  1. Microchip (ISO 11784/11785) – important note: many US-chipped pets have 10-digit chips that are not read by UK scanners. If your pet has an older 10-digit chip, have an additional ISO chip implanted before travel.
  2. Rabies vaccination – current, administered at least 21 days before travel if it is a first vaccine; if boosters are current this is already satisfied
  3. Animal Health Certificate (AHC) – issued by a USDA-accredited vet and endorsed by USDA APHIS within 10 days of arrival in Great Britain
  4. Tapeworm treatment (dogs only) – 1 to 5 days before UK arrival

No titre test required. This significantly simplifies the USA-UK route compared to moving to Australia or New Zealand.

Getting the AHC in the USA

Your vet must be USDA-accredited (not all vets are) to issue the AHC. Find an accredited vet via the USDA APHIS Veterinary Accreditation Program website.

After your vet signs the AHC, it must be endorsed by USDA APHIS. You can submit to:

  • Your local APHIS Veterinary Services Area Office (fastest for in-person or overnight courier)
  • APHIS Headquarters by post (allow more time)

APHIS endorsement typically takes 2 to 5 working days. Build this into your timing.

The 10-Digit Chip Problem

This is the most common complication on this route. Many US dogs were chipped before ISO standards became universal in the USA, and they carry 10-digit (134 kHz) chips. UK scanners read 15-digit ISO chips (134.2 kHz).

Solution: Have an additional ISO-standard chip implanted by your vet. This is simple and painless. The new chip number must be noted in the AHC alongside the original chip number. UK border vets scan both positions and accept both numbers with proper documentation.

Flight Options

Non-stop routes: London Heathrow (LHR) from New York (JFK/EWR), Los Angeles (LAX), Chicago (ORD/MDW), Atlanta (ATL), Dallas (DFW), Miami (MIA), San Francisco (SFO), and other major cities.

Airlines: British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, American Airlines, United Airlines. Each has different policies on whether pets travel as checked baggage or cargo. For large dogs, cargo-only may apply. Confirm with the airline.

On Arrival in the UK

APHA veterinary inspectors at Heathrow’s live animal facility process arriving pets. The inspection is usually efficient for pets from listed countries with complete documentation. Keep originals accessible.

After arrival, update microchip registration to a UK database and arrange local pet insurance.

This guide is accurate as of May 2026. Verify USDA APHIS requirements and APHA guidance before travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The USA is on Great Britain’s Part 2 listed countries (unlisted countries with approved status). Dogs and cats from the USA can enter Great Britain without a rabies titre test, provided they have a microchip, current rabies vaccination, and an AHC issued within 10 days of travel by a USDA-endorsed vet.

Yes. All dogs entering Great Britain require a tapeworm treatment given 1 to 5 days before arrival, regardless of origin country. The treatment must be administered by a vet and recorded in the AHC.

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and American Airlines are the main direct-route options. United Airlines has historically been one of the few US carriers that still accepts dogs in cargo on international routes. Always confirm directly with the airline cargo department before booking – policies change.
