Turkish Airlines Pet Transport: Cabin and Cargo Policies for International Flights
Turkish Airlines operates one of the world’s largest route networks, connecting over 120 countries through Istanbul Ataturk and Istanbul Airport (IST). For pet owners, it offers genuine options for both cabin and cargo travel.
In-Cabin Pet Policy
Small dogs and cats are accepted in the cabin if:
- Combined weight of animal and carrier is 8 kg or under
- The carrier fits under the seat in front (max approx. 23 x 40 x 55 cm)
- The breed is not brachycephalic (snub-nosed)
- The route is not one of the exceptions (check current policy for specific routes)
Maximum 1 pet carrier per passenger. Book the cabin pet space by calling Turkish Airlines or asking at the time of ticket purchase - it cannot be added online after booking in most cases.
Cargo Pet Policy
Dogs and cats may travel as accompanied excess baggage or manifest cargo for most breeds and sizes. Turkish Airlines Cargo handles live animals on freight shipments.
Brachycephalic breeds have additional restrictions for cargo travel. Check the current list directly with Turkish Airlines before booking - the list is updated periodically.
What to Expect at Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport (IST) is one of the world’s busiest hub airports. For connecting flights with pets, note that Turkish Airlines requires the pet to remain in its carrier throughout the connection. The airport has dedicated areas for live animal handling, but connections at IST add time - factor in connection times carefully for cargo shipments.
Documentation Requirements
Same as for all international routes: microchip, current vaccinations, government-endorsed health certificate matching the destination country’s requirements.
Cost
Turkish Airlines charges for pets in-cabin (varies by route - typically EUR 80-200) and for cargo (by weight and dimensions). Get a quote when booking.
