Importing a Pet to Trinidad and Tobago: Requirements and Permit Process
Trinidad and Tobago maintains strict controls on animal imports, managed by the Trinidad and Tobago Central Veterinary Laboratory (TTCVL) under the Ministry of Agriculture, Land and Fisheries. Like other Caribbean islands, the twin-island nation has been free of certain diseases for years and intends to stay that way.
The Import Licence
Every cat and dog entering Trinidad and Tobago requires an Import Licence issued by the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO). The application must be submitted with supporting documents, including proof of current vaccinations and microchip details, at least 4 to 6 weeks before travel. Approvals are not guaranteed and the CVO can request additional information.
The import licence specifies the conditions for entry, the valid entry period and any specific treatments required. Keep the original licence with your travel documents.
Requirements for Pets from Approved Countries
For pets arriving from the USA, Canada, UK and approved European countries:
- ISO microchip (15-digit, implanted before rabies vaccination)
- Rabies vaccination – current and within the valid period
- Rabies antibody titre test (FAVN or ELISA) at an OIE-approved laboratory; minimum result 0.5 IU/ml; test conducted after microchipping and vaccination
- Leptospirosis vaccination for dogs (Leptospira canicola and icterohaemorrhagiae)
- Treatment against internal parasites (roundworms, hookworms, tapeworm) within 14 days of travel
- External parasite treatment (ticks and fleas) within 14 days of travel
- Official health certificate from a licensed vet in the country of origin, endorsed by the relevant government authority and issued within 10 days of arrival
Quarantine at a Glance
Pets from approved countries that arrive with all documentation correct are inspected by a TTCVL veterinary officer at Piarco International Airport (POS) or ANR Robinson International Airport in Tobago (TAB). If everything is in order, they are released to the owner without formal quarantine.
Pets arriving without a valid import licence, with expired documentation, or showing signs of illness will be held at the government veterinary facility. The cost of holding is charged to the importer.
Travel to Tobago vs Trinidad
If you are flying into Tobago’s ANR Robinson Airport rather than Piarco, confirm with the TTCVL that veterinary officers are available on the specific date of your arrival. Tobago arrivals sometimes require pre-notification.
What Commonly Goes Wrong
- Titre test done before microchip implant – the titre test is only valid if conducted after microchipping. A reversed order invalidates the entire test.
- Health certificate not government-endorsed – the TTCVL will not accept a vet-signed certificate without the competent authority stamp.
- Import licence expired on arrival – check the valid dates and ensure your travel date falls within the window.
- Leptospirosis vaccine missing – this is often overlooked because it is not required in many other destinations, but Trinidad and Tobago specifically requires it for dogs.
