Moving Internationally with a Siamese Cat: Vocal Breed, Smart Packing Advice
The Temperament Factor
Siamese are among the most vocal and emotionally expressive cats. They form strong owner bonds and are sensitive to environmental change. During travel:
- They may vocalise persistently in the carrier at the airport
- Hold travel separates them from you – harder on this breed than more independent cats
- In cabin, most Siamese settle once the aircraft reaches cruise altitude
Cabin vs Hold
For a Siamese, cabin is strongly preferred where possible. Hearing your voice and sensing your presence reduces stress significantly.
Most adult Siamese (3 to 5 kg) fall within cabin weight limits. Add a standard carrier (0.8 to 1.5 kg) for a combined weight of 3.8 to 6.5 kg – typically within the 6 to 8 kg limit most airlines set.
Crate Training a Siamese
Start months before travel. The goal is a carrier the cat genuinely wants to be in.
For a Siamese specifically:
- Put a piece of your worn clothing in the carrier (familiar scent is powerful for this breed)
- Feed meals in the carrier with the door open
- Build up to extended closed-door periods gradually
- Practice the carrier being picked up and moved around
A Siamese that finds the carrier a comfortable, owner-scented space handles travel dramatically better.
Country Requirements
No country restricts Siamese cats. Standard requirements apply:
- Microchip
- Rabies vaccination
- Health certificate appropriate to the destination
