Moving to Senegal with Pets: DIREL Requirements for Dakar-Bound Expats

Dakar as an Expat Hub

Senegal has long been home to diplomatic missions, NGOs, business operations, and a growing expatriate community. Dakar is the access point for much of West Africa’s international activity. Pet imports are managed by DIREL.

Health Documentation

DIREL requires:

  1. Official health certificate – issued by an accredited vet, endorsed by your national authority (USDA for USA; APHA for UK)
  2. Rabies vaccination – current
  3. Core vaccinations (as above)
  4. Microchip (increasingly expected)
  5. Parasite treatment records

The health certificate should ideally include a French translation given Senegal’s official language. Confirm with DIREL whether an English certificate is accepted or whether French translation is required.

Arriving at Blaise Diagne Airport (DSS)

Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS) opened in 2017 and replaced the old Dakar-Yoff airport. Most international flights now use DSS. DIREL vets check documentation at the airport.

Life with Pets in Dakar

Dakar has a reasonable veterinary infrastructure by West African standards. Several clinics operate in the Almadies, Mermoz, and Plateau areas. The climate is hot and dry (Harmattan season) or hot and humid (rainy season). Tick and parasite prevention is year-round. Rabies is present in Senegal; keep vaccinations current.

Verify current DIREL requirements before travel. Information accurate as of May 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

DIREL (Direction de l’Elevage – Livestock Directorate) under the Ministry of Agriculture manages animal imports in Senegal. DIREL vets inspect arriving animals at Blaise Diagne International Airport (DSS).

Senegal does not impose mandatory quarantine for household pets from most countries. DIREL inspects the animal on arrival. If documentation is complete, pets are typically released the same day.

Rabies vaccination is mandatory. Dogs should also have current distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, and leptospirosis vaccinations. All must be recorded on the official health certificate. Cats require FVRCP and rabies.
