Qatar Airways Pet Transport: Cargo Rules, Breed Bans, and Doha Connections
Qatar Airways operates one of the world’s most extensive route networks, making it a frequent choice for pet owners on routes through the Middle East. Like Emirates, there are no pets in the cabin on Qatar Airways - all animals travel as cargo via QR Cargo.
Booking via QR Cargo
Qatar Airways Cargo (QR Cargo) handles all live animal shipments. Book through:
- QR Cargo directly at qrcargo.com
- An IPATA-registered pet transport agent (recommended for complex routes)
The booking must be made in advance - QR Cargo imposes maximum quantities of live animals per flight, and popular routes fill up.
Doha (DOH) Connections
Many QR routes connect through Hamad International Airport in Doha. The airport has a purpose-built animal holding facility with climate control. Qatar’s climate (June-September temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C) means:
- Summer embargoes apply to brachycephalic breeds on certain routes
- All pets in Doha transit are held in the climate-controlled cargo facility, not the terminal
- Transit time at Doha should be 3-5 hours minimum to allow for handling and documentation - very tight connections risk missing the onward flight
Breed Restrictions
QR Cargo prohibits or restricts:
- All brachycephalic dog and cat breeds (year-round on some routes; seasonal embargo during Gulf summer on others)
- Breeds banned under Qatar’s national regulations
- Some dog breeds banned from destination countries (enforced at the time of booking documentation check)
Documentation
For all live animal shipments, QR Cargo requires:
- IATA-compliant crate with correct labelling
- Health certificate issued within 10 days of travel
- All destination country import documentation
- Live Animal Checklist (IATA)
Documentation must be presented at the cargo facility, not the passenger terminal.
