South Africa to UK Pet Transport: What Dogs and Cats Need to Enter Great Britain
South Africa to UK is one of the more common pet relocation routes we see, particularly for South Africans moving to the UK for work or families returning. The process is manageable but requires planning – the titre test stand-down is the main constraint.
UK entry requirements for pets from South Africa
South Africa is classified as a non-EU listed third country for UK pet travel. Requirements:
- ISO 15-digit microchip (implanted before or same date as first rabies vaccination)
- Rabies vaccination – valid and current
- Rabies titre test blood drawn at least 30 days after the most recent rabies vaccination
- Titre test showing 0.5 IU/mL or above from a UK-approved laboratory
- UK entry at least 3 months after the date of the satisfactory titre test
- Animal Health Certificate (AHC) issued by a South African Official Veterinarian and endorsed by DALRRD (Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development) within 10 days of UK arrival
- Dogs only: tapeworm treatment (Praziquantel) by a vet between 1 and 5 days before arriving in Great Britain
Getting the titre test done in South Africa
South Africa has several veterinary laboratories capable of performing rabies titre tests for UK purposes. The main approved labs include those operated by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and private diagnostic labs. Your vet will know which approved labs they use – confirm the lab is on the current APHA approved list before the blood draw.
Results typically take 2-3 weeks.
DALRRD endorsement
The AHC must be endorsed by DALRRD. In South Africa, this involves submitting the vet-signed certificate to the nearest DALRRD provincial office or state veterinarian for official endorsement. Allow 5-10 working days for this process, longer during busy periods.
Routing from Johannesburg to London
Direct flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) to London (Heathrow or Gatwick) operate via South African Airways, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic. SAA and BA both accept pets in cargo on some routes – check with the airline’s cargo desk for current availability and breed restrictions.
The flight time is approximately 11 hours. Most pets tolerate this well when properly prepared.
