Moving Pets to Nepal: Kathmandu Import Rules and What Expats Need to Know
Nepal attracts NGO workers, trekking guides, diplomats, and long-term volunteers - many of whom relocate with pets. The country’s pet import system is managed by the Department of Livestock Services (DLS) and requires advance planning but no quarantine.
Import Permit
Apply for an import permit from Nepal’s Department of Livestock Services before travel. Contact the nearest Nepalese Embassy or consulate for the current application form and fees. Allow 3-4 weeks for processing.
Documentation Required
| Document | Requirement |
|---|---|
| DLS import permit | Obtained before travel |
| ISO microchip (15-digit preferred) | Yes |
| Rabies vaccination | Current |
| Core vaccinations | Distemper, parvo, hepatitis (dogs); panleukopenia, respiratory viruses (cats) |
| Internal parasite treatment | Within 30 days of travel |
| Health certificate | Issued and endorsed by government authority in origin country |
Arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport
Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) is the only international airport with DLS veterinary presence. All international pet arrivals enter through KTM. Notify the DLS and your airline’s cargo team in advance.
Cargo pets are collected from the cargo terminal after DLS inspection and clearance. Allow 2-4 hours.
Veterinary Care in Nepal
Quality veterinary care is available in Kathmandu, with several clinics familiar with expat pet needs. Outside Kathmandu, veterinary facilities are limited. Stock up on any regular medications before arriving and identify a Kathmandu vet in advance.
Practical Notes
Nepal’s summer monsoon season (June-September) brings heavy rain and disruption to air routes. Travel in the pre-monsoon (March-May) or post-monsoon (October-November) window for more reliable logistics.
