Moving Pets to Hungary: EU Rules and What International Arrivals Need
Hungary is a growing expat destination, particularly Budapest, which has a vibrant international community. As an EU member state, Hungary follows EU pet travel rules. However, it has its own national breed-specific legislation which is more extensive than many EU neighbours.
From EU countries
A valid EU pet passport with current microchip and rabies vaccination. No additional requirements for intra-EU pet travel.
From the UK
An AHC issued by a UK OV and endorsed by APHA. Dogs need tapeworm treatment (praziquantel) 1-5 days before arrival. AHC valid for 10 days. Entry at Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), which has an EU-approved BIP for live animal arrivals.
Breed-specific legislation
Hungary has one of the more detailed national breed restriction lists in the EU. Restricted breeds include:
- American Staffordshire Terrier
- Staffordshire Bull Terrier
- Bull Terrier
- Rottweiler (conditions apply - not fully banned but regulated)
- Dogo Argentino
- Fila Brasileiro
- And others
Restricted breeds in Hungary require: a Nebih import permit, owner competency certification, liability insurance, muzzle and lead in public, secure housing with specific fencing requirements. Some breeds may be prohibited entirely from personal import.
If you have a breed that might fall under Hungarian BSL, confirm current rules with Nebih (National Food Chain Safety Office) before planning your move.
Registration
Dogs in Hungary must be registered with the local municipal authority and in the national pet registration database within a set period of arrival.
Veterinary care
Budapest has good veterinary facilities. Several international-standard practices cater to the expat community and are familiar with import documentation requirements.
