Moving to Luxembourg with Pets: A Short Guide to EU Pet Travel Rules

Luxembourg is one of Europe’s smallest countries but also one of its most internationally connected – it hosts numerous EU institutions and international companies, and expats make up a significant portion of the population. Pet moves into Luxembourg follow standard EU rules, with one area of caution: restricted breed legislation.

EU Arrivals: Standard Rules

From another EU member state:

  • Microchip (ISO standard)
  • EU Pet Passport
  • Current rabies vaccination

Luxembourg’s ASTA (Administration des services veterinaires) manages live animal import oversight.

Non-EU Arrivals (Including the UK)

  • Microchip (ISO 11784/11785)
  • Rabies vaccination (at least 21 days before first EU entry if first vaccine)
  • AHC issued within 10 days of entry
  • Tapeworm treatment for dogs (1 to 5 days before entering any EU member state)

Restricted Breeds: Read Before You Move

Luxembourg’s 2004 law on dangerous animals covers several breeds. If you are bringing a Rottweiler, Pit Bull, American Staffordshire Terrier, Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, or Fila Brasileiro, you need to research Luxembourg’s current breed requirements carefully.

Restricted breed owners typically need:

  • Registration with Luxembourg ASTA
  • Liability insurance
  • Muzzle and leash in public spaces
  • In some cases, proof of behavioural assessment

This is not an outright import ban for most breeds, but the compliance requirements are real and enforced.

Living in Luxembourg with Pets

Luxembourg is a compact, pet-friendly country. Parks and trails are well-maintained, vets are generally excellent (many speak English, French, and German), and there is no shortage of pet services in the capital.

Annual rabies vaccination is required for dogs. Register your pet with your Commune within 30 days of residence.

Frequently Asked Questions

No additional requirements apply beyond standard EU rules. Pets from EU countries need a valid EU Pet Passport, microchip, and current rabies vaccination. Pets from non-EU countries (including the UK) additionally need an AHC and tapeworm treatment for dogs.

Luxembourg Airport (LUX) is a small international airport and handles live animal imports through its border inspection post. For large pet cargo operations, Brussels Airport (BRU) in Belgium (about 200 km away) has larger facilities. Check with your airline which airport handles your specific cargo routing.

Luxembourg has legislation on dangerous dogs. Certain breeds including Pit Bull Terriers, Staffordshire Bull Terriers, American Staffordshire Terriers, and Rottweilers are subject to additional registration requirements, muzzle and leash requirements in public, and some import restrictions. Verify current Luxembourg legislation before importing a restricted breed.
