Bringing a Pet to India: Import Rules, Documentation and What to Expect

India’s pet import rules are managed by the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD). The process is more paperwork-intensive than many countries, and advance preparation is important.

DAHD No Objection Certificate

An import NOC from DAHD is typically required for bringing pets into India. Applications can be submitted to the regional DAHD office for your destination city. The NOC specifies the animal, origin country, and travel details. Apply well in advance - processing times vary.

Health certificate

A veterinary health certificate issued by an accredited vet in the origin country is required. For many countries, the certificate must be endorsed by the government authority (e.g., APHA for UK, USDA APHIS for USA). India’s DAHD specifies the required health declarations - the vet must certify that the animal is free from signs of infectious disease, is microchipped, and has current vaccinations.

Microchip and vaccinations

ISO 11784/11785 microchip is required. Rabies vaccination must be current. Distemper, parvovirus, and other core vaccines are typically listed on the health certificate.

Approved entry airports

Not all Indian airports have live animal inspection facilities. Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai are the main approved entry points. If you’re travelling to another city, you’ll arrive at one of these airports and then travel domestically with your pet.

Practical note

India’s summer heat can be extreme. Pets travelling to India between April and June face temperatures that may trigger airline cargo embargoes. Schedule travel outside peak summer or confirm temperature restrictions with your airline before booking.
