Pet Transport from Germany to UK: AHC, Tapeworm and the Post-Brexit Process

Post-Brexit, the UK is a third country from the EU’s perspective - and equally, the EU is a third country from the UK’s perspective. Moving your pet from Germany to the UK requires an Animal Health Certificate, even though both countries are close neighbours and Germany was previously the easiest of European origins.

What you need

Your dog or cat needs:

  • ISO 11784/11785 microchip
  • Current rabies vaccination (first vaccination requires a 21-day waiting period)
  • Animal Health Certificate issued by a German Official Veterinarian (amtlicher Tierarzt) and endorsed by the relevant German authority (typically the Kreisveterinaeramt - district veterinary office)
  • Dogs only: tapeworm treatment (praziquantel) administered by a vet 24-120 hours before arrival in Great Britain

The AHC process in Germany

In Germany, the amtlicher Tierarzt (Official Veterinarian, OV) is typically employed by the district veterinary office (Kreisveterinaeramt or Veterinaramt) rather than a private practice. Your private vet can prepare the health documentation, but the endorsement needs to come from the OV. Alternatively, some private practices have staff with OV status.

Entry into Great Britain

The approved entry points for pets entering Great Britain from non-listed third countries (including EU members, post-Brexit) are specific. Eurotunnel Le Shuttle (pets in the car), ferry routes to Dover/Portsmouth/other approved ports, and direct flights to approved airports (London, Manchester, Edinburgh, etc.). Air France, Lufthansa, British Airways, and easyJet operate Germany-UK routes.

Northern Ireland

Entry into Northern Ireland has different rules under the Windsor Framework. EU pet passports may still be accepted for entry into Northern Ireland from EU countries in some circumstances. Confirm with DAERA before planning your route if Northern Ireland is your destination.

Timing

The tapeworm treatment timing is the most common source of errors. It must be between 24 hours (minimum) and 120 hours (maximum) before arrival in Great Britain. Work backwards from your arrival time to schedule the vet appointment.
