Moving Pets to Ethiopia: Veterinary Import Permits and Addis Ababa Entry Guide

Ethiopia is a significant hub for international NGO activity, UN agencies, and African Union operations, making Addis Ababa home to a large expat community. Pet import is managed through the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and requires a government import permit.

Import Permit

Apply through Ethiopia’s Ministry of Agriculture or the nearest Ethiopian Embassy. You will need to provide:

  • Vaccination records
  • Microchip number
  • Owner passport and Ethiopia residency documentation
  • Details of the animal (species, breed, sex, age)

Allow at least 4-6 weeks for processing.

Arrival at Bole International Airport

All international pets arrive through Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa. MoA vets are on site for inspections. Cargo clearance can take 3-6 hours. Notify the airline’s cargo team and the MoA veterinary office in advance.

Ethiopian Airlines, one of Africa’s largest carriers, operates extensive international routes to Addis Ababa and has experience handling live animal cargo.

Practical Notes

Addis Ababa is at 2,355 metres altitude, which means temperatures are mild year-round despite its latitude. This is a genuine advantage for pet cargo logistics - no extreme heat embargoes. Outside Addis Ababa, veterinary care is very limited. Bring adequate medication supplies.
