Bringing a Pet to Colombia: ICA Requirements and What Expats Need to Know
Colombia is a growing expat destination with a vibrant international community in Bogota, Medellin, and Cartagena. The ICA (Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario) manages pet imports.
ICA health certificate
Colombia requires a health certificate in ICA-accepted format. This must be issued by an accredited vet in the origin country and endorsed by the government authority (APHA for UK, USDA APHIS for USA, etc.). The certificate must confirm microchip number, rabies vaccination, internal and external parasite treatments, and clinical health.
Vaccinations required
Rabies vaccination is mandatory and must be current. For dogs, distemper, parvovirus, and leptospirosis vaccines are typically listed. For cats, panleukopenia and other core vaccines. The certificate must include product name, batch number, and vaccination dates.
Parasite treatment
Colombia requires evidence of internal and external parasite treatment within a set period before arrival. Confirm the timing requirements with ICA or a specialist agent.
Arriving at El Dorado
Most international pets arrive at El Dorado International Airport (BOG) in Bogota. ICA inspectors check documentation and inspect the animal. If documentation is complete, the process is typically efficient. Medellin and Cartagena also have international airports that can receive pets on some routes.
Practical note
Bogota sits at high altitude (2,600 metres), which can affect some animals, particularly those with respiratory conditions. Consult your vet if you have a brachycephalic breed or an older animal with any cardiovascular or respiratory history.
