Pet Transport from Canada to Australia: DAFF Requirements and Full Timeline
Canada to Australia is a long and complex route for pet transport, primarily because Australia’s biosecurity rules are strict and the paperwork chain involves both the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) and Australia’s DAFF. Allow at least 6 to 9 months for preparation.
Australia’s requirements
Australia operates one of the world’s most stringent live animal import regimes. For Canada-origin pets, the requirements include: ISO microchip, core vaccinations, rabies vaccination, rabies antibody titre test (at least 0.5 IU/ml from a DAFF-approved lab), pre-export isolation, and 10 days post-arrival quarantine.
Microchip
ISO 11784/11785 chip required, implanted before rabies vaccination.
Rabies vaccination
Current rabies vaccination required. Must be given after microchip for the vaccination to be considered valid for titre test purposes.
Titre test
A rabies antibody titre test (RNATT) must be conducted at a DAFF-approved laboratory. In Canada, the Kansas State University Veterinary Diagnostic Lab (KSVDL) in Manhattan, Kansas is the most accessible North American option. The blood sample must be drawn at least three months before arrival in Australia, and the result must show at least 0.5 IU/ml.
Australian import permit (BICON)
Apply for the import permit through Australia’s BICON database (agriculture.gov.au/biosecurity/bicon). The permit specifies the treatment pathway and confirms the quarantine facility booking. Apply well in advance of travel – processing takes several weeks.
Pre-export isolation
Canada-origin pets must be isolated in an approved facility for a period before export. The duration is specified in the import permit.
CFIA health certificate
A CFIA-accredited vet must issue an official health certificate and CFIA must endorse it. The certificate must be issued within 10 days of travel.
Quarantine on arrival
10 days at Mickleham (VIC) or Eastern Creek (NSW). Book in advance through the quarantine facility – space is limited and must be confirmed before the animal’s departure. Fees apply.
Routing
Canada to Australia routing typically goes via Los Angeles (LAX), Vancouver (YVR), or direct if available. Air Canada and Qantas have code-share arrangements. Confirm live animal cargo acceptance at time of booking.
Agent recommendation
This route benefits enormously from IPATA agent support at both the Canadian and Australian end. The title test timeline, BICON permit, and quarantine booking all have strict dependencies and deadlines.
