Bringing Pets to Bangladesh: What the Import Rules Actually Require
Bangladesh is not one of the more common expat pet destinations, but international development workers, UN staff, and corporate expats in Dhaka do bring their animals. The formal system for pet imports is less codified than in many countries, which actually means flexibility – but also uncertainty.
The Key Authority: DLS
The Department of Livestock Services (DLS) under the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock manages veterinary import matters. There is no straightforward online permit system as of 2026. The most reliable approach is:
- Contact the Bangladesh High Commission or Embassy in your country before travel for current guidance
- Contact the DLS in Dhaka directly (available via the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock website)
- Use a specialist pet relocation agent with Bangladesh experience, who will have contacts within DLS and customs
What You Need
- Microchip (ISO 11784/11785 recommended)
- Rabies vaccination – current
- Official health certificate – issued by an official vet in your home country, endorsed by your national authority
- Customs declaration – list your pet on your customs arrival form as an accompanying personal item
- Vaccination booklet/EU Pet Passport or equivalent – bring the original documentation plus copies
On Arrival at Dhaka (DAC)
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (DAC) is the main international entry point. DLS vets at the airport will inspect documentation. Keep original certificates accessible. If anything is missing or unclear, the pet may be temporarily held in the airport’s holding area – a stressful but usually resolvable situation.
Practical Considerations
- Dhaka has several competent private veterinary practices; ask your employer or the British High Commission for recommendations
- Heat and humidity are significant factors – brachycephalic breeds need particular care
- Rabies is present in Bangladesh; keep vaccinations current throughout your stay
- Departing with your pet requires an export permit from DLS when you eventually leave
This guide reflects conditions as of May 2026. The Bangladesh pet import process can change with little notice – contact DLS and your country’s embassy before travel.
