Pet Transport from Australia to Germany: What Australian Pets Need for EU Entry
Australia’s EU Status
Australia is a listed Part 1 country under EU Regulation 576/2013, which means Australian pets do not need a titre test to enter Germany. This is a significant advantage – getting a titre test done in Australia and waiting 180 days is not necessary for the EU.
What Your Australian Pet Needs
- Microchip – ISO 11784/11785 (standard Australian chips comply)
- Rabies vaccination – current. First-ever vaccine must be at least 21 days before EU arrival.
- EU Animal Health Certificate (AHC) – issued by an Australian government-accredited vet on the EU template, endorsed by DAFF, issued within 10 days of EU arrival
- Tapeworm treatment (dogs only) – praziquantel, 1 to 5 days before EU arrival, recorded in the AHC
DAFF AHC Endorsement
DAFF issues export health certificates for pets leaving Australia. Process at agriculture.gov.au. Allow 3 to 5 business days. The vet who prepares the AHC must be DAFF-registered.
Routing Options
Australia to Germany requires at least one transit. Common routes:
- Sydney or Melbourne via Singapore (SIN) to Frankfurt – Singapore Airlines or Qantas to Singapore, then Lufthansa or Singapore Airlines to Frankfurt
- Via Dubai (DXB) – Qantas or Emirates to Dubai, then Lufthansa or Emirates to Frankfurt
- Via Doha (DOH) – Qantas via Doha, then Qatar Airways or Lufthansa to Frankfurt
Each airline and each leg must accept live animal cargo. Confirm on the specific dates and aircraft types for your route.
German Registration After Arrival
Register your dog with the local Einwohnermeldeamt (residence registration office). Hundesteuer applies. Register within 4 weeks of establishing residence.
Verify current DAFF and EU entry requirements at agriculture.gov.au and your destination EU member state’s authority. Information accurate as of May 2026.
